jean stopped me to tell me today that the way that I handled the recent situations (which I don't really want to talk about on LJ) involving a few students was amazing for her to watch. She said that if I can handle this all without falling apart, then I can do anything and go anywhere.
And she said that she ... she thinks I'm different. "Not different like physically, I mean, at least not for me, but just, just the way you always stand up for what you believe in... you're always being yourself."
I can tell you that I almost laughed when she said that, given how I don't always act like myself at school. But I always try to be as much myself as I can, since I spent so long not being myself.
Also, we talked about gun violence today during homeroom, and how, statistically, you're more likely to be injured by gun violence if you own a gun. The kids didn't get it.
"This issue with gun violence, and the statistics relating to gun violence against persons who own guns relates to knowledge and practice. People who own guns for personal protection, very rarely practice with their weapons, don't handle them regularly, and usually, when there's trouble, they reach for the gun to protect them, when they don't know how to use it. Then the gun gets taken away from them, and used against them. Whereas, had they not had the gun in the first place, they might not have been a victim of gun violence."
That's what I said, sort of (paraphrased), and Jean was shocked, because... she couldn't think of why that was either (it was a lesson plan prepared for us by an outside entity).
PS three of my students are allergic to fur and dander. *sigh* No ratfaces in the classfaces. *sad*
