Sometimes I feel that no one really likes me, that everyone just pretends and talks about me behind my back.

I first learned about sex from my parents. When I was 12 they took me to a ranch to watch a stud mount a mare. It was pretty graphic, but i guess it explained everything.

When I was little, maybe eight or so, I had a Sesame Street kite. It had Big Bird and Grover and Bert and Ernie and Elmo on it, and it was wonderful. One day we had a good strong wind so I took my kite into the yard to fly it. The kite climbed higher and higher as I played out the string, letting the plastic rod it was wound around roll through my hands with the force of the wind. Twenty, thirty, forty feet up, still rising, and I held the tether, controlled this manifestation of an invisible force of nature. I was on top of the world.

Suddenly the rod stopped spinning. The end of the string wasn't tied down, had whipped off and hurtled far out of reach in an instant. The kite sailed into the branches of a waiting hickory tree and caught fast.

It stayed there for weeks, slowly disintegrating in the rain and heat until nothing was left but the string, forlornly flapping in the breeze.
