I'm back from Baton Rouge. I thought that the 12 hour car trip, each way, would be incredibly mind numbing, but it really wasn't. I couldn't sleep in the car, and I don't have any music, ie. CD/mp3 player, but I managed to keep myself entertained for the most part. We ended up getting to the hotel at 4 am on Sat. only to be woken up in three hours to go play our first Ultimate Frisbee match, which was at 8 am.
If you are like me, and have a tendency to overgeneralize, you might think that the South is always warm and that you might also believe that coats and long sleeves are not necessary in Louisiana. You, like me would be wrong. It was 40 degrees and raining the entire day on Saturday, and I had nothing to wear but shorts and a T-shirt. I can honestly never being so cold in my life. Despite being chilled to bone, I had a blast. We had four matches on Saturday, and unfortunately, we only won one of them, but it was some of the craziest frisbee that I've ever seen in my life. The mud was ankle deep in some places, and what grass was left was incredibly slippery. Every time that a player dove for the frisbee they would slide 10+ yards, which reminded me of my days on the slip-n-slide. In fact, one field that we were playing on was right next to a lake, and one kid made a dive on the side line that carried him headfirst into the lake. Good times. Once I got back to the hotel and took a hot shower, I felt like a whole new person. A bunch of people went down to Bourbon Street in New Orleans in the evening, but I was too tired to go anywhere.
Sunday was much, much nicer weather wise. The temperature was in the mid-sixties and there was hardly a cloud in the sky. My team fared a bit better on Sunday, finishing with 2-1, to bring our tournament record to 3-4. Our last win was incredibly sweet as we came from 3 points down to pull out the win in sudden death. Since we were completely covered in mud, a bunch of us decided to jump into the lake and get cleaned off before the long journey home. We had a good laugh about the "No swimming" sign afterward. I managed to dry off rather quickly in the hot Lousiana sun,... you know, the one that I expected to be there all along. On the ride back, I managed to do a little of the homework that I had to do in the car with the flashlight that I brought with me. We also ended up tailing this car that was going 85-90 for over an hour and a half on the highway, low and behold they got pulled over for speeding while we got away scot free.
Definitely one of the better weekends in recent memory.
