What can I say...
It was a bloody awesome night. It started with a pretty crap support band - The Bird Blobs. With a name like that, you'd expect a band that likes to have fun; instead, they were boring and seemed to try really hard to sound heavy. I don't know who picks these bands, but what-everrr.
They got off the stage, after a less-than-warm reception, and by 9pm our excitement was peaking!
xeyr and
captjyossarian were sitting down, as
captjyossarian's been having trouble of the very painful sort with one of his feet lately. Myself and
gavla were on the floor.
At 9pm, NIN came on stage. They played for two hours straight, then at 11pm, finished and walked out. I kind of like that - come on stage, do your stuff, walk off. No encores, no bullshit.
The set list was impressive. They played a few of my favorite songs which I didn't think I'd get to hear in concert, such as The Wretched, Sin and Reptile, and lots of songs that I love that I did expect them to play: Terrible Lie, March of the Pigs, Starfuckers, Closer (made me melt) and ended on a high note, with Head Like A Hole. I believe everyone in the Hordern was bowing down before Trent ;) Off the new album, they played You Know What You Are, which I really like, The Hand That Feeds of course, The Line Begins To Blur, and With(a) Teeth(a), which sounded better in concert. Unfortunately Collector didn't get played, or Sunspots, or Every Day Is Exactly The Same (...or every other song off with_teeth). Also, as expected, they didn't play The Perfect Drug.
A lot of NIN sounds a lot "better" on the albums, because so much goes into the making of their songs, so many layers melting into each other, so many sounds which cannot be reproduced in a concert - but a CD can't reproduce how they go absolutely off in real life.
I'm developing a slight obsession with
Trent (despite the haircut - I was fond of his Snape-like hair). I wonder if he plays the piano, or if he composes the piano bits, or both.
I wish I was there again tonight.
