Intuition is dreaming.

For the first time since becoming human, she's dreaming as herself, properly abstract - drifting through ( Read more... )

Len fell asleep in a makeshift cave.

(It was really a collapsed building.)

Now, in her mind, the same landscape takes shape around her -- barren, gray, empty, dead.

She reaches out to touch a broken wall, but her hand goes right through it.

She thinks she's dead, too.

She isn't.

Also, there's a girl there full of rainbows, smiling.

Intuition says hello. She just doesn't bother with the out-loud part.

"I can't remember the last time I saw a rainbow," she says, heart lifting at the sight of the girl.

She can feel the warmth her own blood. It's still flowing through her veins, she's not --

"Never had the chance to look up."

"My rainbows are more sideways than usual," says Intuition with the echo of repetitive phrasing.

"It's nice to meet you, Lenore."

She understands.

"Everything's gone."

There is a breeze, and Lenore watches as the dust and ash blow between them.

"Except for us. Why?"

"It's a representation."

Intuition shrugs.

"Something happened to this world. An uncontrollable exchange. I was brought in from somewhere else. I used to be more than I am. Some of what came here did... this."

Thoughtfully, she adds, "But not to Kansas. That was saved, somehow. There are no transfers there, nor have been since the first day."

"Uncontrollable exchange?"

She knows what she means, but never thought she'd hear it in such a way.

There's another gust, a harsher one. Lenore shivers.

"I'm scared," she says, voice barely a whisper.

"So am I."

It's honest, at least.

"But you'll have help. There's someone close by."

Meditatively, she adds, "She'll help you get to Kansas, I think."

"Are they here?"

The ones who keep chasing her, who keep finding her and hurting her, the ones she'd do anything to get revenge on --

She feels strangely vulnerable, all of a sudden.

"No."

There's certainty in that voice, and a glint of rainbows in the landscape around them. Inty knows.

Lenore breathes a sigh of relief so strong that it brings her to the ground and there she stays, hands resting against the dusty pavement.

"I'm... free, then?"

"As a bird."

There's the oddly comforting sound of flapping wings, and a single jewel-bright hummingbird peeks out from beneath some rubble, taking a few careful hops towards Lenore.

Intuition giggles.

Lenore's eyes widen and she reaches out for the little bird, laughing lightly.

She can't remember the last time she laughed, either.

The hummingbird looks incredibly pleased with itself, and zooms up through the air to hover gently just above Lenore's hand.

All around, there are blades of grass and tiny little flowers emerging shyly from the rubble, seeming to grow in surreptitious lurches whenever they're under no direct scrutiny.

"I like this dream," she says, watching everything grow with wonder.

I don't want to wake up.

"I wish... this would really happen."

"It might," says Inty with a secretive little smile.

"Not everywhere in the world is like this."

As she speaks, the surreptitious grass grows more quickly, until they're standing in a calm field that looks as though nothing bad has ever happened to it in the history of time.

"Some," she says, sweeping a hand out at the changed landscape, "is like this instead."

...Don't look now, Lenore, but there's a slightly beat-up cargo liner sitting in the ground some distance behind you, half-buried as though it's learned to float in grass instead of water. Inty frowns at it, then laughs helplessly.

"It would appear reality is intruding on my metaphor," she says, rueful.
