There's a flash of a transfer point up above, and a rather large, rather angry looking monster (along with a swarm of considerably smaller creatures) drop down with a crash

Is it a plane? Not that Finnian would recognise it if it was. Not that it is.
Val gets a wave. A big wave, that can be seen from a distance, on account of being made with a great, suddenly appearing spectral hand of blueish-silver-green light.
About twenty feet up, the wings flare out to several times their normal size. She hangs there, suspended in a rippling curtain of light. (It's very pretty.)
Finnian is religious. His particular religion does, in fact, have a concept of angels - a strong one, in fact. Holy Knights have their armour modeled after them.
So, as you might imagine, he's a little awed (but still, notably, batting monsters away when they get too near), right up until Val talks.
"I think I've got it covered," he draws a gun (and in a very show-offy moment, spins it in his hand) and absently shoots the large monster in the eye as it approaches. Possibly slightly disturbing is how casual he is about it. "But, hey, I brought plenty for everyone, so if you want to help, I won't stop you."
She eyes the gun, but doesn't comment. Her armour is up; if he suddenly decides to get nasty, she's covered. And he doesn't look like he's about to get nasty.
In the middle of that crater lake full of dead squid, apparently.
"Basically, this world's fucked over. Keeps bringing in people and things from parallel universes. Flash, bang, kraken everywhere. As far as I know there's no way to get home."
"... Okay. I have to admit, that's a lot to take in, would you give me a moment?"
Said moment is apparently used to dispatch the monsters, using sword, gun, weird metal-and-glowy-runes gauntlet-claw and a lot of kicking. It's not really a moment, so much as five minutes or so.
What's that bright light, up there in the sky?
Too low, too white, and too dim to be the sun. Too shiny and too big to be a bird.

Hey, that's new.
She tucks her wings and dives. The bright light becomes a bright triangle, shaped something like a fighter jet and something like a paper airplane.
It is approaching the ground rapidly.

But, hey, you know, that's good too. Everyone loves triangles.
The spectral claw fades away.

"So who the fuck're you?"
...Val Bel: An angel until she opens her mouth.

Then he snaps out of it pretty quickly.
"Finnian Halloway."

"Parallel universes?" When he's done.
Reply
"Yeah, parallel universes. Don't get the concept, or just don't like it?"

"Sure. If you can carry me?"
Val looks small and not especially strong to him.
