Abandoning people in their house after they've offered you hospitality is incredibly rude, especially if the person in question is disabled and unable to follow. Leah was upset and bitter for at least fifteen minutes ( Read more... )

"Innovator, this is Oracle." There's a voice that's all business.

"Hey O."

Leah picks up on the business voice, but she won't pick up her own until she needs it.

"How's it going?"

"Status quo," Barbara's slight smile is audible. "I need some advice from a tinkerer."

"Tinkerer," Leah repeats. "I can handle that title. What's up?"

"I can't seem to get a source for decent comm gear, which means I need to start thinking about how to build them in the field." And she figures Leah's the person to go to with that sort of problem.

Leah gives a small hum, which is pretty close to a laugh.

"What kind of signal are you thinking?"

"I think that's your department, but I've got a list of stuff I want if that helps? In order of priority: rugged, long ranged, easy to use, and secure."

Then she adds, "I figure that the whole possible to make out of stuff that's easy to find goes without saying."

"Didn't even need that," Leah says.

She puts her bow down, and moves upstairs, finding her way easily.

"Actually, s'lucky you phoned me. I have a couple of prototypes I've whipped up."

"Why am I not surprised?" Barbara laughs. "What do you suggest?"

Leah gives a quick schematic run down of one of her devices as she comes to her table.

"I prioritised range, mostly. So all I need is a bunch of transistors from cheaparse radios lying around, and near unlimitless wiring. but hey, can you scavenge hearing aids for me?"

"Probably..." Barbara frowns, thinking for a second. "I think there's a manufacturer's warehouse in Nebraska with a shipment sitting on the docks. Or that's what pre-disaster records suggest. I could send a team to check it out."

"Brilliant," says Leah. "Cause I'm thinking we could extend the short wave loop they use, some how. Save doing a lot from scratch."

"That's a bit hardware-y for me, but that's why I came to you," Babs grins. "And saving time is always a good thing."

"So what have you been up to? The city treating you well?" How's that apartment Barbara helped arrange for?

"Yeah," Leah says, sitting back in her chair. "S'a neat operation here. Getting practice in.Even went out in the field yesterday."

Which Babs has presumably heard about through Dick, though Leah doesn't know this.

"I'm glad things are working out, then. You don't need anything else, right? You're set up fine for things?" She's pretty sure Leah can take care of herself, but it never hurts to check.

"Actually..."

Leah's at her computer, so as she says this, she requests a transfer session with part of Oracle's system.

"... I made a shopping list. Nothing urgent, I just want to start on weaponry again."
