Today hasn't been so good.

Jean woke up with a raging headache

and the feeling like parts of her were stretching precariously too thin.

Which was good enough reason to finish up dinner prep early and settle herself down out in the field, under a tree, with a book.

A certain someone knows all about stretching too thin. He's done it from time to time himself. Although the fact that he has body up in the tree, and his neck down wrapped around a branch so his head can peer over her shoulder shows that he keeps trying to stretch thinner.

"Good book?" He attempts to make his tongue fork and flicker, but it doesn't turn out so well.

"Poetry," Jean says calmly, without looking up. Her lips may have perked at the corners. "Nineteenth century British."

Then she does look up, sun hat framing the top half of her face, and the bottom edged by fiery hair and then dress, book, and legs. "Are you looking for apples?"

"Melons, actually." Did we mention Thomas is a bit of a perv? Yeh, just a bit. "Or, y'know, just hanging out.Practicing." Hard work getting in tight holes.

... When he sneaks into buildings. He's not THAT much of a perv.

Eyebrow goes up, but the smile is bemused. Jean leans her head back on the tree, to make the looking up easier.

"I might do that later. I decided this afternoon was relaxing."

Jean looked forward, toward the shadow of the tree and the field beyond them.

Then, said. "It is nice."

Perhaps the fact that she doesn't answer the second would be telling enough, if he understood other things.

Thomas starts pulling his head back around. "Settlin' well and everything then? Good, good, nice to hear. Stayin' here at the farm then?"

"For now." She nodded, simply. "I have a matter that needs cleaning up before I want to see more of this world."

Namely Scott. The not her Scott one.

She looked up. "Where would you go if you could go anywhere?"

San Francisco. "Probably Italy. Seems like a nice place, good architecture." Lots of stuff to liberate.

"It is lovely. Better in earlier centuries." There's a small amused tremor in her voice. The might betray she caught the last thought.

He blinks a few times at that. "Huh?"

"Before destruction and renovation and reimaging?" Jean offered, settling her hands on the pages of her book. "When it was prime."

"How would you know?"

Jean paused, seeming to consider the question, and it's explanation, more than the implications it would give.

Her lips curled faintly.

"I can see it."

Yes, that is present tense.

Blink blink.

"Whuh?"

There is something in the passage of time, in the interaction of tempers and understandings. Somehow it makes her more willing here, with him.

She looks at him, sedately against the confusion.

"Its easier to show you?"
