A couple people made it clear that not everyone who was reading Absinthe had been keeping up with my LJ - and thus wasn't aware of all the crazy shit that's gone on the past two years that's made Absinthe's hiatus a lot longer than originally planned ( Read more... )

I didn't realize you had a defined end point to Rita. I'm really surprised it's going to be short enough to finish within a year! Well, I look forward to it.

Yep! I've known how it was going to end since shortly after I came up with its format. I haven't figured out entirely how I'll weave my four plotlines to all hit that place at once, but I'll manage.

My estimate is about 120-150 pages. It's about the same length as my estimate for Absinthe, as it turns out, although a printed book will probably be about twice as thick because each page of Rita is going to be a full spread on paper.

Hmmm.... unless you do a stab style binding with a heavy horizontal bias...

I saw a Chronicle book printed in China with stab binding at the book shop today, so it can be done mass market!

I'll save that for if I actually get someone else interested in publishing it. For now it's just gonna be Lulu or some other POD.

Screw that noise, if you can't get someone else to do it, go kickstarter! There's no reason you should pay for it.

I don't think I QUITE have the audience to do one of those with my comics. And more importantly the desire to we a zillion books to flog into distribution channels - THAT is really the important thing publishers do, IMHO.

No no no, publishers are the A#1 best, but if that falls through, no need to diy-pod and pay for the copies with lulu when you can get people who might be interested in your work to pay for it. Helps to build an audience. Esp. if you set a lower goal and then exceed it. Most of the stuff I've supported on kickstarter hasn't been that of my friends- it's stuff I've seen and thought "that looks cool" :)

(also, these guys are in my hood and do better work than lulu and much much cheaper- http://www.bookmobile.com/) :)

Hm. Who do you get your printing done at when you do kickstarters?

Also hm, bookmobile says you gotta have 5 or more titles before they'll do POD, which means I can go with them in like... 2013, if I knock together a sketch compilation.

When I did my kickstarter I did Bookmobile. They're great. If you want to use them, let me get you my girl's contact information so you can talk to her directly. She's great.

But, you can pretty much use any printer anywhere. The nice thing about the kickstarter is -if it gets paid out- that it gets your name out beyond your known readership while paying for the making of the book for the people who bought it and then gives you a few extra boxes of books for cons and things.

Yeah, toss me your contact at Bookmobile, if you would. I wanna try to get the gears movin for a KS of the first Rita collection if I can't get any nibbles at ECCC.
