That was a fairly full day! I went out to City Park to see the Consortium of Genius performing at one of the last stages along the route of the Mardi Gras Marathon. They were swapping the stage back and forth with The Local Skank, a ska act. I think I nearly gave myself heatstroke at one point, when I got up and danced to "Because We're Scientists" like a crazed dervish. I had to, though; that song's built around a catchphrase me and Jason had going. I certainly got sunburnt; I really didn't think about that because I'e gotten used to Boston, where the sun's still too far away from the Earth to do things like that.
Afterwards, I went a short ways across the park to the museum, to see their current travelling exhibit of boards, design work, and whatnot from Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, and Frog Princess. I turned down the audio tour because I was pretty sure it wouldn't tell me anything I didn't know, the fact that I found myself hazarding guesses as to who was responsible for storyboards that were only credited to "Disney staff", and squinting dubiously at how some of the pieces were labelled, leads me to feel I did the right thing.
The one thing I really noticed about Frog Princess? Everything was digital. Boards, designs, animation, everything was a print of a digital file. Except for the maquettes. Oh: there was also a sketchbook open to a page with doodles of the crocodile, and a couple sketchbooks with pen drawings done on location during their research trip down here; everything else was a printout.
Also, there was a running commentary about methodology in my brain, based on the simplified explanations of process that hung next to many of the pieces throughout the entire exhibit. I may not be working in the animation but I'm still an animator in some important way, because that running commentary was along the lines of "yeah, that's how we do it" or "yep, we're still doing it this way" - I still think of myself as part of that group.
It's only 8:30 at night but I'm probably going to sleep now. Being sunburnt takes a lot out of me these days. I really should have worn my sun hat...
