"Sorry to disturb~!" A bright voice echoed in the doorway. After looking around restlessly like he was curious, he held out the paper bag he had been holding. "My mom told me to bring this."
"Ah...even though you didn't have to. Thanks anyways."
"But I was surprised~ You decided pretty quickly, right?"
"No, I've been talking about it since a while ago."
Waving his hand lightly at Fujigaya who was tilting his head going "You did?" and lining up the shoes he took off, Kitayama walked down the hallway.
Even though he called it a hallway, it wasn't long. If you open the door that was near your left hand, you'll find a living room about 8 tatami mats big. A television on a table, and a simple white sofa that would become a tight fit when two people sit on it. On the left hand side, again, a small kitchen.
"You didn't finish unpacking yet?" After seeing the unopened cardboard boxes on the other side of the room, Fujigaya then looked around the middle of the room.
"Don't stare that much."
"Heh~ Do you have something that'll make you worry if I see them? Like ero books?"
"Haa?"
"That's mean~ Even though you have me, you would actually buy those books. But you're a guy, so it can't be helped. I understand it's different, going out with someone and those books..."
Kitayama glanced at Fujigaya who was talking on his own and sighed softly.
How many years had it been since they met and started going out? His way of thinking, way of interacting, and looks did change somewhat, but only this guy's amount of speaking had never changed from before.
"Are, where's Pocky-kun?"
"He's sleeping in that room right now." The door Kitayama was pointing at led to the bedroom. Even though it was a bedroom, it was only as big as 6 tatami mats, really.
"I thought I can play with him though~" Fujigaya pouted and kept on looking at the door of the bedroom, looking disappointed.
"He'll wake up eventually. Anyways, do you want to drink something? I only have bottled tea and coffee though."
"Can I have tea?"
"Okay. Sit down."
With his back facing the sofa that Fujigaya had sat on, Kitayama took out two glasses from the cupboard above the sink.
(...okay, so what should I do?)
The paper bag that was just left beside the sink. In there was the item that never appeared in his original plan. Taking out the bottle from the fridge, he poured out the tea as he organized his thoughts.
Kitayama took a small breath and went 'yoshi' inwardly, before speaking towards the back of Fujigaya, "Naa, you want to eat bread?"
"Bread?"
Fujigaya, who had been flipping through a magazine that was on the table, turned his head to look this way.
"Ah, no, actually, it's really more a sweet than bread though..."
"I ate before coming, so I'm not hungry!"
"Aah, un, I see..."
Maa, if you think about it normally, when you go to someone's house when it's not meal time, and you were asked if you want to eat bread...
(...you won't eat it...)
More like, he probably was wrong for sticking to his original plan?
Holding the glasses filled with tea with his two hands, Kitayama told Fujigaya who had been sitting in the middle of the sofa to move over, and sat down beside him. You won't feel it when you're sitting alone, but when two people sit down together, it's surprisingly a tight fit.
Thinking about how he mentioned the bread earlier, Kitayama felt his heartbeat get a little faster. At a distance where arm and arm are almost touching, won't the other hear his heartbeat? He hated himself who thought about these girly things.
"Thank you~"
Unable to meet the eyes of Fujigaya who took the glass from him, Kitayama looked sideways without thinking. How long has it been since he couldn't look at Fujigaya's face? He felt like it was like getting to know your first love.
It's been a few years since they've started going out, and of course, they've climbed those adult steps sometime ago, but even so, he never thought he would feel this way.
Even though, he just wanted to tell Fujigaya those words.
As he thought, to rely on small tools was wrong in the first place. If he was a man, he didn't have to make turns, and would win with a direct shot. Kitayama made a fist with his hand and tightened it without letting Fujigaya see.
"Ne, you know Kitayama, it's good that you started living alone...but can you wake up? On your own."
Even he admitted himself that he was the worst when it came to waking up. Even if he was waken up once, Kitayama would think that waking him up was a dream, and go back to sleep again. It was a every day thing for him to walk into the workplace barely making it on time.
A teasing smile appeared on Fujigaya's face.
Usually, this would be the part where Kitayama would retort back, but this time it was different. What good timing and what good topic did the other give him. "Maybe he knew what I was thinking?" Kitayama thought inwardly, feeling happy. He hid that expression though.
"I'm worried about that too. My mother always woke me up after all."
"You also get waken up by Yokoo, right?"
"Right, right, Yokoo-san always took care of me. I didn't ask him for it, but when it's a job that I really can't be late for, he would always call me."
"He really does take care of you then."
"Except since it's early in the morning, he would trip over his words. Like 'Don't be tate (late)'. And he would continue speaking like he didn't mess up."
"Ahaha! That's right! And when you point it out, he would say like he didn't mess up."
"Maa, so to wake up in the morning..."
Going back to the original topic they had slipped away from, Kitayama turned his body to face Fujigaya properly. Maybe it was because the expression on his face was quite serious, Fujigaya straightened his back just slightly. Why did he notice there? He felt a little hurt...
"Um...I..."
The words were there, they had gone up to his throat. Despite that...
A high-pitched cry echoed throughout the room. Then, the sound of the door being scratched on.
"Ah, did he wake up?" Fujigaya immediately got up from the sofa and opened the door of the bedroom. A white and brown Papillion puppy ran out of the room, giving a woof that sounded like he had been waiting.
Big ears that stood up and fluffy fur, those were the charming points of his dog, Pocky-kun. Even though Kitayama doted on the puppy despite what the puppy might do...
Kitayama glared at Pocky who was in Fujigaya's arms, snuggling against the other. It was as if he saw those big eyes making fun of him just now. Why did he had to wake up at such timing?
"So cute~! I want to own a dog too!"
"Oh well..." That's what Kitayama thought when he saw Fujigaya being innocently happy. He thought of himself as quite pitiful, thinking like that. It wasn't like Pocky planned to disturb them, yes.
Taking the leash from the shelf, Kitayama hooked it on to Pocky who was still in Fujigaya's arms.
"...let's go take a walk?"
When they went out, the sun was starting to set. People like students coming back from school and housewifes buying dinner, walked by them quickly.
"Have you found a walking course?"
"Un. There's a walkway in the park nearby. I'll carry Pocky until there." Since there were quite a number of cars passing by around here, while being extra careful, Kitayama took Pocky from Fujigaya and held the puppy tightly so he won't run away.
As they walked, Kitayama looked around the streets. Even though it wasn't right in the middle of the city, transportation was good though, and there is a park and shops nearby. If one walked into the inner streets, they'll find not-well-known places like café and second-hand clothes shop. It was a place that he arrived at while finding a place that allowed pets, but like the real estate worked had said, it was a place that seemed easy to live in.
Once they arrived at the park, Fujigaya pointed at the leash that Kitayama was holding. "Can I hold it? I want to try walking a dog!"
"Don't let go."
"I know!" Taking the leash with the brightest smile, perhaps he was pulled by unexpected strength, Fujigaya ran a few steps involuntarily.
"Hold it properly!" Watching the back of Fujigaya who was nodding his head mindlessly and walking a few steps ahead, Kitayama recalled how he had admired couples walking a dog together when he was a teen. He now had a lover that was greatly different from the cute girl he had imagined back then though...
While getting pulled along by Pocky, every now and then, Fujigaya would look back and smile at Kitayama with eyes sparkling like a child. Thinking how this kind of scene wasn't bad either, Kitayama's cheeks grew warm. Two grown-up men walking a dog while smiling at each other made quite a scene, but since there were no people around anyways, he hoped it would be acceptable.
After walking down the walkway for a bit, Fujigaya stopped in the middle.
"What is it?" In front of their eyes was a round, big flower bed. There were just small buds showing their faces scattered around only. Kitayama wasn't sure if the seeds were planted at a different time, but compared to the other flower beds around with various colours of flowers, this flower bed stood out.
"Here, what flowers would grow?"
Since around the area, there was only this park that was that big, Kitayama would probably come by a lot during walks. He would pass by this flower bed each time too, so he should definitely be able to see the flowers bloom.
"If they bloom..."
I'll tell you, but those words stopped at his throat. In its place, to his own surprise, words that he resisted came tumbling out.
"...would you watch them with me?"
"Eh?"
Like he didn't understand Kitayama's meaning, Fujigaya turned his head around in surprise.
He had been too abstract. Kitayama took a deep breath and tried again.
"I'm actually saying if you would live with me."
Finally, he said it. Words that were in his mind for the whole day. To be able to say it made him felt accomplished, that his heart was pounding. Even though he had just started living alone, it was something that he had been thinking about before moving out.
If they could watch the growth of the flowers in the flower bed that they would pass by each day in their walking course. Things like the weather when waking up, comments about when watching television news, the flowers at the park had blossomed...all those every day things he wanted to share with Fujigaya.
Kitayama felt so embarrassed that he couldn't face the other, and excuses started to come out with thinking.
"It's okay if you don't want to. Because I think it's far for you to go to your university. You said it was hard commuting to university..... Wait, Fujigaya?"
Fujigaya, who had been shocked and not moving, suddenly crouched down and hugged his knees.
Confirming in his mind that he didn't say anything bad, Kitayama tried to look at Fujigaya, but the other had buried his face against his knees and he couldn't see Fujigaya's expression.
"What to do...I'm so happy. ...me too, when I heard that Kitayama had started living by himself, I thought about what if we lived together..." Fujigaya's voice shook a little.
The other wasn't crying, right? "Are, Tai-chan, you’re crying?" Kitayama asked on purpose.
Fujigaya raised his head a little, and with slightly red eyes, he replied, "I'm not crying..."
To be honest, somewhere inside his heart, Kitayama was worried about getting rejected. That's because Fujigaya hated being alone, and he had a habit of whining when feeling lonely (it's the truth though), and he has his own territory where only people close to him can enter.
"Come on, stand up." Kitayama reached out his hand and helped the other stand up.
"Kitayama, thank you."
Since Fujigaya smiled at him with still slightly red eyes, Kitayama felt embarrassed suddenly and let go of his hand that had been still connected to Fujigaya's hand, and took the leash from the other, starting to walk quickly. Right now, he didn't want to show his expression to anyone. "Come on, let's go back."
The shadows of the street lights stretched under their feet.
"My waist hurts a lot..."
At Fujigaya's complaining voice, Kitayama woke up from his light sleep. When he opened his eyes slightly, he met eyes with Fujigaya who was sitting up while rubbing his waist.
"Ah, you're awake?"
In the end, when they got back from their walk, Fujigaya had said with good humour "Tadaima" at the doorway, and Kitayama hugged him from behind, kissing Fujigaya in that position. Thinking how they were both busy and it's been a while, he went with the flow and continued.
With the energy that it's been a while, from the doorway and on the flooring doing that, it must have been a lot on the body. After that, they moved to the bedroom and did it properly too.
"Sorry..." Kitayama apologized in a small voice that might or might not have been heard. "But at the beginning, the one who created the chance was you," he didn't forget to add in his heart.
"Ah, I'm hungry." As Fujigaya said that, he picked up only a top from the scattered clothes and wore it, leaving the room. Sounds from the kitchen can be heard, and then, from the door, Fujigaya peeked in. "Ne, the bread you mentioned earlier, can I eat it?"
"Mh...sure!" Kitayama answered, his mind still not yet clear.
Wait. Bread? He liked rice more, so why he did go out and buy bread...? When he realized the answer, blood immediately rushed upwards to his head.
"Oi, Fujigaya, wai-...!"
"...ouch! ...what is this?"
It was almost at the same time, when he ran out of the bedroom without wearing anything and Fujigaya covered his mouth and made a sound of pain. Shocked, Kitayama looked at the bread Fujigaya had been eating. From the white bread with chocolate chip, silver metal was shining.
"It seemed like there was something in the bread...this...a key?" Taking it out with his fingers, Fujigaya's eyes met with Kitayama's. "...did Kitayama put it in?"
"...yes."
At the beginning, there had been no plan to put something into the bread. Really. Originally, it was going to be a cake, and not just holding and eating it, so he even prepared forks. He had planned that the fork would hit something, and when Fujigaya would ask, "Are? A key?", at that point, he would say smartly, "Would you live with me?"
Thinking back now, just where was he being smart? But at that time, he believed that it was a wonderful plan and didn't doubt himself.
It was because there was a scene like that in a love story that he read before. Though, in the novel, it wasn't a key, but an engagement ring. Then, having seen that scene in his dream, Kitayama went out to buy cake with much anticipation. Unfortunately though, since he just moved, the only cake shop he knew had the sign "Closed for the Day" coldly on the door, and when he went to the convenience store, things were sold out. Disappointed, and shoulders slouching, on the way back home, the sign of a bakery flew into his view.
Kitayama explained that to Fujigaya. It was his own story, but it was pitiful. It was like he was a comedian trying to explain why his joke was funny. Certainly, his face was still in shock. When Kitayama looked at Fujigaya in front of him, the other's shoulders were shaking as he tried to hold back his laughter.
"...is it funny?"
When Kitayama said that, Fujigaya replied, "B-because...in place of cake, you bought bread...bread fufu, great idea...ne...haha..."
Fujigaya probably thought that if he looked at Kitayama's face, he'll laugh and Kitayama will get angry. Fujigaya had his hand over his mouth to stop laughing as he spoke. His laughter wasn't stopping though...
"Cake and bread is the same thing!"
"They're totally different! Ah, Kitayama really is funny."
"Don't tell anyone..."
"Eh~ I thought about telling Kawai though!"
"I beg you, just stop..." The day Fujigaya tell Kawai about it, of course members around the same age like Goseki-kun and Yokoo-san, and maybe even their kouhai would know about it.
("I heard Kitayama-kun put a key in a bread and gave it to Fujigaya-kun to eat."
"Really? What the heck?")
With that conversation appearing in his mind, Kitayama pressed his temple without thinking. He should have just done something with that bread. Even though he regretted it now, it was too late.
"But I'm happy. It's because this was the result of you thinking about me." Fujigaya placed a hand on Kitayama's shoulder as he continued to laugh teasingly.
"Yes, yes, please don't say anymore. I'm going to go sleep..."
"Me too!"
Feeling tired, Kitayama went into the bedroom and slipped into the bed. When he thought their hands touched within the blanket, Fujigaya held on to his hand.
"Good night."
Kitayama closed his eyes as his right hand felt body warmth.
(...Going to sleep while holding hands. What kind of silly couple are we?)
In his dream, there was the walking course in the park at dusk. The two of them walked together side by side and ahead of them, freshly blossomed flowers can be seen.
That definitely, is a scene that wasn't far away.
Notes: Isn't this story cute? Hiro XDDD And like, Hiro naked while Tai-chan is only wear a shirt in the kitchen...someone needs to draw that. 8D //whacked// But aljsfhalsfas when I first read it, so ADORABLE. The bread, the cake //cracks up// And like, Hiro being jealous of Pocky-kun! XD
Anyways, back to the translation part. Note that writing a story in Japanese is quite different from English, especially since this isn't a proper novel. The point of view in Japanese actually change kind of. At first, it was like in third-person, Hiro's view...but half way you realized it's first-person, Hiro's POV. I ended up using third-person all the way though. Hope you guys don't mind.
As well, I tried my best to translate so it's smoother in English, since if I did just straight translation, it would really awkward, so if you compare the Japanese text and English text, there will definitely be lots of differences, but you still get the main story and all that. So yea...
Hope you guys enjoyed this! I translated in the middle of the night, so hopefully, I didn't make any huge mistakes. XD;
Comments are appreciated and loved~
