Precious Existence
By Shattered Tenshi
Satoshi sighed as he flopped down on to the bed, staring up at the ceiling. It was going to be yet another day with nothing to do. The black cat jumped up on to the bed and snuggled close to him. Giving the cat a body rub, his mind started to wander again. He's been doing that a lot lately.
Another small sigh escaped his lips. It's been a while since he had moved into the apartment to live with Kurosaki. Their relationship remained some sort of unknown to him. They were standing on a blurry line between friendship...and something else.
Lately, Kurosaki had been coming home late and leaving early, barely exchanging any words with him. Satoshi knew he was probably involved in a bigger swindling case again. Kurosaki never told him anything, but he can always guess. He knew Kurosaki didn’t want him to get involved in anything, but he really would like Kurosaki to talk to him, even it's only a little bit.
As much as he understood that Kurosaki meant well, Satoshi couldn't help but feel lonely at times. There was Neko-chan with him, and he didn't dare talking to their neighbour, Yoshikawa Tsurara. Satoshi knew Kurosaki was wary of the female, so he stayed away from her, even though she seemed to want to talk him quite a bit.
Sometimes, he wondered if Kursaoki needed his presence. He felt like he was a nuisance at time. He knew it wasn't the case, but he needed the reassurance. Especially since recently Kurosaki was so cold to him.
Supporting himself on an elbow, Satoshi lifted his head and realized Neko-chan had fallen asleep, probably because of his rubbings. He chuckled lightly and slipped off the bed, leaving the cat there.
Satoshi stretched his arms and decided to check the refrigerator for something to eat. He blinked at the near-empty space inside when he opened the door.
"Ah...I need to go get groceries then..." he mumbled to himself.
Grabbing his jacket and wallet, he nuzzled against the sleeping cat. "Ittekimasu, Neko-chan," he said. With that, he headed towards the supermarket nearby.
When he entered the supermarket, grabbing a basket, one of the workers saw him and greeted him cheerfully. Satoshi just smiled and nodded his head before walking up one of the aisles, trying to figure out what he should buy. Considering how he was a constant customer of the supermarket, a few of its workers had begun to recognize him and would greet him whenever he showed up.
Staring at the different vegetables available, Satoshi decided that was pretty much what he needed to get. He remembered there were still two packages of meat in the freezer. Both Kurosaki and he didn't eat a lot of fruits, so he didn't need to buy any. Though some juice sounded good. Sometimes they consume too many cans of beer, and he was starting to worry about their health.
Satoshi wondered when he started to worry about things like that. Health, nutrition, and all these things he didn't really care about before. His sister was often the one who worried about that. Was it because he was living with Kurosaki now? That he knew the other didn't care about these things and can eat only instant noodles for a whole week straight without making a face?
Once he got everything he needed to buy in his basket, he went to pay for them and stepped out of the supermarket. Where can he go now? Usually, he would have headed straight back to Kurosaki's apartment, but perhaps he was feeling a bit restless today. Neko would be still sleeping anyways, and his groceries can survive without a refrigerator for a while.
Wandering a bit aimlessly around the neighbourhood, Satoshi stopped in his steps when he arrived at the library. Maybe he should go in? It's been a while since he had read any books, considering the books Kurosaki owned were of topics he would never read anyways.
Pursing his lips in thought, Satoshi finally stepped into the building. It was quiet, like being in Kurosaki's apartment during the day. Trying to make the plastic bags containing the groceries rustle less, he wandered around the building, glancing at the numerous book titles all around.
In the end, he picked up a random novel and settled down on to a comfortable looking one-person sofa in an isolated corner of the library. The plastic bags set down at his feet, Satoshi got comfortable and started flipping through the book.
Satoshi wondered if his life didn't change so drastically, perhaps he would have been studying novels like this, reading complicated textbooks at an university. He would have had a normal life, struggling with his studies while wondering about what his future job would be. Now, he just lazed around the whole day, wondering how tomorrow would be and if Kurosaki would still be there.
At times, he felt like he was waiting. Waiting for Kurosaki to open his mouth and identify what was between them. It was no use if he knew, but Kurosaki didn’t admit it. Perhaps, that's why he thought they were still on that blurry line when they might have passed it a long time ago.
He had always been the one who made the move - the one who befriended Kurosaki when they were in high school, the one to hug Kurosaki when they were first reunited, the one to admit to Kurosaki that he was an akasagi, the one who arrived at Kurosaki's door despite his betrayal.
Now, it was Kurosaki's turn to make a move.
Kurosaki stopped his steps going up the stairs when he noticed Neko stretching her body right outside the door, then lying back down again. He glanced at his own apartment and sucked in his breath when he noticed that the lights weren’t on. Usually, when he came back, he would see the lights of his apartment turned on and a faint smell of food coming from inside. Neko would have been inside, perhaps rubbing herself against Satoshi's leg.
Tonight though, there was nothing.
Unable to stop the sense of panic that rose within him, Kurosaki climbed up the few remaining steps and picked up Neko into his arms. He unlocked the door of his apartment and grimaced when he was faced with darkness. Flicking on the lights, he then put the cat down before walking into the small space, trying to find the person that had stumbled back into his life months ago.
Kurosaki felt his face paling slightly when he realized the apartment was empty. Where was Satoshi? He didn't see any note that the other might have left, telling him where he went. He knew Satoshi had nowhere to go anyways. The other was always there waiting for him. Where was he now?
His mind immediately went towards the worse direction. Did his enemies finally find out about Satoshi? It was something that he had feared for a long time. Even though how he tried to lie to himself, numb his logic through words, he just thought that just as long as Satoshi was by his side, he could protect the other. Even though he now had a weakness, he wouldn't let Satoshi be harmed in any way.
The reality though? Satoshi was now gone, and Kurosaki had no idea where the other might have gone or if Satoshi was captured somehow, how to save the other.
He was useless. He laughed at himself inwardly.
Kurosaki had an urge to take it out on the swindler he was in the process of swindling from. All thoughts of forming a plan flew out of his mind. He was like himself all those years ago, grabbing a knife and just stumbled around, thinking he can revenge his father that way.
After that many years...he still didn't grow up.
Growling, Kurosaki ran out of his apartment, slamming the door closed. All he wanted to do was to find Satoshi and bring the other back to his side. Running down the stairs, he stopped when he heard a familiar voice.
"Kurosaki?"
Kurosaki looked up and saw the person he was looking for, standing at the bottom of the stairs. The other was panting slightly as if he had run a marathon, a lone sweat rolling down his skin.
"Gomen. I fell asleep in the chair at the library and didn't wake u-"
Satoshi didn't get to finish his sentence as Kurosaki flew down the rest of the stairs and hugged Satoshi tightly. Kurosaki could feel the brunette stiffening in his arms.
"K-Kurosaki?" He could even hear Satoshi’s eyes widening, surprised at his actions. The plastic bags Satoshi was holding fell to the ground with a thump.
Satoshi slowly wrapped his arms back around Kurosaki. "K-Kurosaki? I'm sorry...for coming back late..." he said softly.
Kurosaki didn't understand the rush of relief that ran through him when he saw Satoshi safe and sound. His body just moved and the next thing he realized, he was hugging Satoshi, something that he has never done before because it was always Satoshi who hugged him. He realized he liked the feeling though, and it was wakening something within him.
He had once thought that it was okay that if he never saw Satoshi again just as long as the other can be left out of the danger around him. After that moment though, he realized it wasn't possible. He wanted Satoshi by his side. He needed Satoshi by his side. He didn't want the other to leave him.
"Kurosaki...?" Confusion was evident in Satoshi's voice.
After a while, Kurosaki pulled back and looked at Satoshi. He cupped Satoshi's cheek with a hand. "Satoshi..." He could feel the other shiver under his touch.
Perhaps, it was his turn to do something for Satoshi. The other had done so much for him, so it was his turn to do something in return. As his present for Satoshi. It was his turn to make a move.
"Satoshi..."
"Hm?" Satoshi tilted his head as he looked at Kurosaki.
Instinctively taking a deep breath, Kurosaki said, "I like you."
Satoshi blinked and just stared at Kurosaki.
"So don't leave me, Satoshi..."
Slowly, a shy smile appeared on Satoshi's face. "I'm not going anywhere, Kurosaki..." He leaned forward and brushed his lips against Kurosaki's.
They seem to be doing things the opposite way today.
Sliding his arms from Satoshi, Kurosaki took a step back. He bent down and picked up the groceries from the ground. Without saying anything else, he started to head back up towards the apartment. When he noticed the other wasn’t following him, he stopped and turned around. "Satoshi? Are you coming?"
Satoshi, don't run after him anymore. They can walk together side by side.
Satoshi looked up at him before smiling again and caught up to Kurosaki, taking a bag of groceries into his own hand. Kurosaki's lips tugged upwards and together, they headed back into Kurosaki's apartment.
It doesn't matter if it's one person or two, just as long as Satoshi was by his side, perhaps he can take the whole world with him and run away.
To escape from this dirty society that ruined both of their lives.
Kurosaki knew he couldn't promise anything. Perhaps when he meets his enemy again, he will just rush forward without caring about anything. Perhaps he will spend his whole life executing his revenge, but he knew, just as long as Satoshi was by his side, he could live more like a person in the world.
With Satoshi's presence around him, he can relax, even if it was just for a bit.
He can live like a normal person, living for Satoshi...and himself.
Author's Note: OH MY GOSH, KIRA I WROTE SOMETHING. //whacked// Anyways, it's been a while since I wrote stuff, and I finally fulfilled another request? >.>'' It's not like I don't have time...but it's just whenever I do have time, I feel like doing nothing because university breaks your brain that way. I'm procrastinating at the moment, by the way. Because KuroSato is much more interesting than brainstorming for my essay, trying analyze Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde using Virginia Woolf's theory of what modern fiction should be.
That ends the trilogy! No, I swear. D= Nothing is resolved, but yet something has been changed, so this is where I shall leave KuroSato. At least in this fic world. I will write other KuroSato fics when the ideas come to me, but they will most likely not follow this storyline anymore. There's just something about KuroSato that makes me unable to actually give them a happy and resolved end. They don't work that way. ><''
I don't really like how everything flowed in this fic...like it's not bad...but it's not the best either. I hope people still like it though na.
