Since the Watchmen reviews have been out and everybody's fighting over it..I just wanna give my 2 cents about the movie.
I liked it.
I've read the graphic novel, I know Alan Moore hates any movies regarding his work and in some ways for good reason, but I thought the movie was good. There were problems in it, yes, but going around crying that it took liberties and isn't the same as the book is stupid and pointless. They are never the same as the book. Frig even a tweeny book like Twilight couldn't get developed properly into the movie...book to movie is just near impossible if not 100% impossible to do. I loved Dark Knight, but there's even liberties in that one.
With Watchmen, the main issue in my opinion was the lack of character development and the history regarding the enormous and deep world that Moore created. The movie couldn't capture the emotional depth within the novel. I may have been giggling and enjoying the character portrayals, NiteOwl and Rorschach were amazing, but people who watched and didn't read the book did not get attached. Turning that giant of a graphic novel into a 2 1/2 hour movie would never develop such great characters and the world they live in perfectly. There was even Hollywood's fingerprints in the movie like Archie having machine gun in it..that clearly was added in for the action hype. Same with the longer sex scenes, and the prison fight (which was awesome btw), but it IS a Hollywood blockbuster..I never doubted that would happen. The other thing regarding the violence and what not, people have been complaining about the book not having that brutal of fighting or murder, but that was made what...20 years ago? 30 almost? It's a different age and sadly people EXPECT more violence and what not. Although the slow-mo's to speed-ups constantly were...eh...they could have been toned down a bit. The last thing I'd complain about was the music, I know it took place in the 80's but GAWD were some of the choices horrible...I like orchestral music far better than using mainstream songs to capture the time of the movie.
Even with these problems though, I want to go watch it again. I'm going to. It was gorgeous to look at, it was entertaining..I was never bored during it, I got into the movie and caught myself leaning forward at some parts..although that could have been my bladder crying for release lol. Anyways..I know many people are going to disagree...especially hardcore fans, but enjoy it for what it was..a portrayal of a formidable graphic novel. I can't wait for the 30 mins of deleted scenes that they have confirmed..who knows..that could maybe develop quite a bit of character or plot development.
Oh..and I think the ending may have worked better especially for this day and age. The novel's ending might have been too..."Oh come ON!!" unbelievable...even in a world with a Blue god heh.
