In order to encourage myself to update my LJ more, I've decided, due to a suggestion from Christina, I'm just going to write. I think an awful lot, so why not put it down somewhere? I love to hand write, but dedicating myself to regularly doing that is difficult. Almost as hard as trying to go back and read what I've written, since my handwriting is awful.
Over the past year, I've become fairly obsessed with a show called Legend of the Seeker. It's based on the Sword of Truth novels by Terry Goodkind. I haven't read the books and have no immediate plans to, but I won't rule it out as a possibility, someday in the future. I love to read, but I have a pretty firm idea of what it is that I love about the show and I have no idea how the books might match up to that.
LotS premiered on November 1, 2008. I tivoed it from the beginning, having seen numerous commercials for the show that made it seem like it would be some cheesy but fun show with some very sexy people. All of these things are true, but it is much, much more! The show centers around our main character, Richard Cypher, played by
Craig Horner. He has been raised in Westland, one of the three provinces of the LotS world. The other two are D'hara and the Midlands.
In the first episode, we come upon Kahlan Amnell, played by
Bridget Regan. We learn that Kahlan is a Confessor, and as a Confessor, she has the power to magnify the love a person has within them for her, allowing her to control the person. This power allows her to serve the people of the Midlands, who respect and fear her. She has the ability to tell if people are lying and, if she "confesses" an individual, they are bound to her until her death. Her destiny is to find the Seeker who, it has been prophesied, is the only one capable of overthrowing Darken Rahl, played by
Craig Parker.
Upon reaching Westland, she meets up with Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, a wizard of the first order, played by
Bruce Spence. (holy eyebrows, batman!) These four characters are integral to the story and they are interconnected in many amazing ways.
The show is filmed in New Zealand and is absolutely beautiful. Similar in many ways to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, there are many wide, sweeping shots of gorgeous hillsides, and much of their time is spent trekking through forests, mountains, rivers and plains. The show has a fairly large budget, so they play around a lot with various slow and stop motion effects during fight scenes, which is one of the things that makes the show so visually appealing.
Getting down to the characters, lets start with Richard. He is the Seeker, the main character of the show, and entirely selfless. Upon learning that he is destined to defeat Darken Rahl, he takes the task on like nothing else has mattered more to him, and uses his power as the Seeker to help anyone who needs it along the way. He is quite often shirtless and, when going into a fight, has an adorable tendency to grit his teeth. Richard is the epitome of a white knight, getting himself into trouble for it more than once along the way.
Kahlan has dedicated her entire life to the cause of defeating Darken Rahl and ensuring that the Seeker is around to do it. She would easily give her life for the Seeker, and along the way, much tension develops between Richard and Kahlan, of the fun, sexual type. Due to Kahlan's gift however, nothing can come of their relationship. :( Kahlan in and of herself though, is amazing. She largely wields two small knives during fights, and is able to defend herself against many men at a time. She also has various bouts of gorgeously epic hair throughout the show, which has spawned a meme within the fandom itself. Entire picspams are dedicated to Kahlan's hair, and trust me, it's worth it.
Zedd is entirely eccentric and very old. His eyebrows are probably the first thing you will notice, but there is much more to him. As a wizard of the first order, he is able to do some very powerful magic, which is evidenced at various points throughout the show. However, much of Zedd's appeal, to me anyways, is wisdom. His job was to train the Seeker, to prepare him to defeat Darken Rahl. Rather than training a young boy in swordplay and narrowing his focus to his destiny, he allowed Richard to grow up as any child would and allowed him to have the sort of child hood that truly prepared Richard the best for his role as the Seeker. He selfless in most ways, except when it comes to Kahlan.
The characters, the storyline, the idea- all might seem a little contrived, and I went into it hoping for a silly, cheesy show that I would love to hate. It has it's moments as far as not-so-great acting, but still manages to be beautiful, appealing and avoid some pretty obvious cliches. It is currently in production limbo, but fans of the show are eagerly awaiting a third season, with much hope.
I leave you from this entirely fangirly post with a Legend of the Seeker picspam, mostly to motivate people towards how amazing this show is. (:
