I got me a meme from lovely and wonderful
Sarene. If you’d like to play, just comment, and I'll give you four fandoms, then you tell me who your favorite character is in each fandom and why. Pics are ♥ but optional. You can do this here or in your journal or both.
Sashi gave me Ouran High School Host Club, D.Gray-man, Saiyuki, and Star Trek! As you can see, I am very, very diverse in my love of anime guys. What can I say, I enjoy the megane side of life. (How Garak fits the pattern I’m not quite sure - feel free to tell me if you can find a connection!)
pictures and too many words under the cut...
Cho Hakkai - Saiyuki
Cho Hakkai is my One True Crush and the Megane to end all Meganes. He is brilliant and so, so, so scarred and fucked up (though he is definitely healing). I think everyone here knows his backstory? Born as Cho Gonou, he was orphaned at a young age and separated from his twin sister at the same time. He found his sister (Kanan) again as a young man and for a while the pair lived together as a couple (this does not squick me in the slightest). However, he came home one day to discover that the cowardly villagers had offered Kanan up as a sacrifice to a hideous demon king, famed for raping and devouring innocent (and not so innocent) human women. Gonou did what anyone in his situation would do, massacring the treacherous villagers and beginning a month’s long quest to eradicate the offending youkai’s clan and rescue his lover/sister. He managed the first part, but when he arrived at her cell door half mad and covered in youkai blood, she announced that she was pregnant and offed herself. More carnage followed and then Gonou was rescued by Gojyo, healed, ripped out his own eyeball, went to a monastery, changed his name to Hakkai and started wearing a monocle. It is a good back story. I love his angst and I love his madness. The things that come out of his mouth are sometimes just a bit off. But always polite. And very, very, very smart. He’s the brains of the outfit for sure.
He can’t hear of a woman in danger without wanting to rescue her. And that is hot. He comes out on top in any verbal sparring match, his speech is polite and his grammar is perfect. And that is hot. He comes out on top in most physical fighting matches as well and isn’t above some low blows. And that is hot. Oh, and did I mention that he’s now (as a result of the massacre and his own self-loathing) part youkai? And that when he takes off his limiters he gets elf ears, pointy teeth, and vines that coil about his entire body? And THAT is hot. In spite, or maybe even because of, all of his wonderful skills and attributes, he considers himself deeply flawed. That is also hot. I don’t even need to explain this. Anyone who can’t immediately discern the appeal of Cho Hakkai for themselves needs a pulse transplant.
Kyoua Otori - Ouran High School Host Club
Kyouya, is… Well, I once described him as “Hakkai-lite”, but really he’s “Hakkai-young-and-privileged.” He is considered cold and calculating and terribly, terribly clever and he is definitely all of those things. He runs the host club, but allows Tamaki to think he’s just there to manage the accounts. He is nicknamed “the shadow king” by Haruhi, for his behind the scenes machinations. He is nicknamed “the demon king” and “the dark lord” by other club members, due to his terrifying dark side (you don’t want to see him when he is angry). When in a temper, a single glance from Kyouya (with or without a flash from the light-reflecting glasses) has been known to reduce small children to tears and grown men to quivering jellies. He can cut with his words, but leave his opponents wondering if they’ve just been insulted and he is the epitome of class, taste and good breeding (just ask him).
In spite of all the “secret identities” his real secret is that he actually cares. He goes to incredible lengths to help his friends (working himself until he passes out on the streets of Paris while seeking Tamaki’s missing mother, for example) but will conceal those efforts at all costs, or cover them up with some selfish motive or claim of personal gain.
He is keenly aware of duty, and will likely marry a woman who will strengthen the family business (he’s said as much in canon). It doesn’t really matter who he marries though because (now begins a bit of head canon) I believe that Tamaki is Kyouya’s one true love. He has never done anything but aid Tamaki and Haruhi in coming together as a couple. But before meeting Tamaki, Kyouya was a very lonely and very bitter boy. The manga series is now over and the couples that were going to pair off have done so, but I like to think that, for the sake of the Demon King’s soul, he will always be near his friends and that maybe someday Tamaki will see what is standing beside him and have some kind of yaoi epiphany. (After all, Haruhi can still date Hikaru).
Komui Lee - D.Gray-man
Komui Lee has two sides and both are rather broadly drawn. In the anime, he is largely used for comic relief and there is some of that in the manga as well, but perhaps not as much. Like many of my other boyfriends, Komui is genius-level smart. The epic smarts, in his case, tilt him a bit toward the “mad genius” end of the spectrum and when involved in some new invention the welfare of others is generally not a consideration. In this way, he can be rather dangerous. He also tends to hide from paperwork, shift his duties onto others, and to vanish without a trace for long periods of time.
His other side is really the side I’m in love with. Though he can seem cold and callous, he actually cares very much for the scientists and exorcists who work under him and he suffers very real guilt and pain when his comrades fall.
As a very young man his parents were killed and he was raising his baby sister up on his own. However when his sister was about six or seven, she was stolen away by the dark order because of her gift. The order tried to turn Lenalee into a weapon, but succeeded only in nearly killing her. Knowing he couldn’t fight the system, Komui joined the order himself and worked his way up the ranks until he was able to go to work at (and eventual run) the order’s headquarters in Europe. When he arrived, little Lenalee was strapped to her bed, very nearly comatose but when she realized her brother had come for her, she also realized that he symbolized home and that, now that he was here, her home was the order. Komui’s greatest passion is still his little sister of whom he is fiercely protective. Much of the time the love between them is sweet, but every now and then there are hints that Komui might be slightly fixated upon his sister in a vaguely unhealthy way. I do not find this off-putting in the slightest.
Actually, I ship them. Hard.
Elim Garak - Star Trek: Deep Space 9
Garak is a step away from the rest of my list in that he is the only 3-D guy and the only non-human. Let’s just say that, even before I discovered animated boys, I was already staying pretty far away from human males.
Garak is not a megane character. He is however the smartest being on Deep Space Nine. He is a spy and no one is quite sure whose side he is on. He is very dangerous and without scruple when it comes to getting the job done. He is a capable torturer, murderer and infiltrator and you never know when he’s going to switch sides. He holds a grudge. He also has a wicked and wonderful sense of humour and can quote Shakespeare liek woah (but c’mon, what star trek character can’t?). In a verbal sparring match with everyone else on this list (providing they all had top-of-the-line universal translators with a keen grasp of word play) he might actually win. Yes, he might. On many an occasion, an insurmountable problem has been neutralized when Garak pulls the trigger for the Starfleet guys who can’t. He is never thanked for this.
He was neglected and abused by his father as a child and, even as a middle-aged man is still seeking approval from the man. He is lonely, utterly abandoned by his people, and hated and mistrusted by everyone around him until he makes a very few friends on DS9. In the end, he sees everything he ever fought for almost entirely destroyed. ...Any character who needs a hug, but probably won’t accept one and could easily kill me with his bare hands, has always been a weakness of mine.
