What have I been doing with myself? Well...
I saw Rockapella on Friday night. Their Christmas show came to the Berklee Performance Centre, and it was pretty sweet. I like a capella music; as much as some people think it's cheesy, and tease me relentlessly for liking it, it is something that requires a lot of skill to pull off well, and shows that you don't need anything other than your own body to make music with. I mean... the show itself was pretty cheesy, I have to say. They had a lot of their songs choreographed, and they had this Christmas set behind them; I mean, it's a show that has to appeal to all the blue-hairs with ridiculous amounts of spending money. But when I closed my eyes (even though I had like... the most amazing seat, haha!) it was super.
Saturday, I had a singing gig! I like singing a capella even more than I like listening to it. And that is a lot! David, my teacher of vocal improv and jazz choir at school, emailed me last week saying he was in a quartet that was singing Christmas carols at a tree-lighting thingy in Jamaica Plain, and they needed a soprano, and could I do it. I said yes, of course; the fact that he asked me, and not a colleague of his or a student who is a voice major is a pretty huge compliment in itself, I think. Anyways, the gig was super fun; we rehearsed about an hour before we sang, and we just had a bunch of simple arrangements of Christmas carols that were sight-readable, and a few that were a bit harder, and a really jazzy version of Silent Night that was gorgeous... and man oh man, singing with singers who can sing is just one of the most indescribably amazing experiences I have ever had. Like... we read it once through, pointed out what needed to be fixed and then sang it again, and it was perfect. Ah. Love. Anyways, it was a super-fun time, it was really casual because we were just outside in front of some church and people were around drinking hot chocolate and listening to us sing, it was great. There was one little kid in a stroller who wanted to hear Jingle Bells, and we didn't have an arrangement for it, so we picked a key (G, by the way; I was also appointed pitch-pipe, which was a lovely trip down memory lane, haha) and just started singing; and it easily could have sounded like we did have an arrangement. Everyone sang parts that fit together... gah. I love singing. I love love love love love love love singing.
Anyways, the bass, Joel, who got us the gig, runs a couple of choirs in Jamaica Plain, as well as a yearly event called
"The Boston Caroling Mob", which I plan to attend. So fun!!
And today, we cooked a ham! After the smashing successes of the turkey duo, we missed having a big, family meal, and thus decided to cook a ham! It was delicious. And by delicious, I mean holy crap it was amazing. Like wow. I didn't even put mustard on my ham, it was so good. Mmmm. I didn't take pictures of the ham; I'm sure you can imagine it in all it's glorious glazed goodness. I saved the ham bone, and I plan to make pea soup as soon as I have time, which will be sometime later this week. Mmm, pea soup... I'm so excited. Food is so amazing. Too bad I am only just cracking the surface of epicurean culture.
On our trip to Shaw's to get the ham, we happened upon a rather amusing price-tag; it was so amusing that I had to steal it, scan it, and make it my LJ userpic. Which you can now see. I am not making this up. I just don't get it though; I mean... okay, maybe you printed them by accident, but why on earth would you bother to stick them up on the chicken-broth?
Over and out.
