Winter's Bone, by Daniel Woodrell
This was a quick read (suitable for the eliptical trainer!), a modern page turner detailing some truly trying times of a young woman in the Ozarks. It took me a while to get caught up in the concerns of the main character, but the author did a good job of engendering fierce loyalty to her as she so valliantly displays it herself.
My book club chose this - I'd never heard of it. Some of them didn't like it, thought it was too dark. SPOILERS: For me, it was so far away from reality that I got to pretend that I knew intimacies about modern day hillbillies and I loved every page of it. For me, the ending is a perfectly satisfying outcome, full of optimism.
