Me talking extensively about why the new Watchmen plot makes sense.

B.Y.O.S. (Bring Your Own Squid): The New Storyline

Veidt and Doctor Manhattan are trying to create a renewable energy resource. They are basing their plans off of Manhattan's powers. That's what him and Veidt are doing in that scene where his clones are sexing up Laurie.

Simultaneously, the government knows they are doing this and are concerned. Eddie Blake, who has been their stooge for many years, is put on the case and starts investigating. He makes the connection between Pyramid Whatever and Veidt Industries, and what exactly Veidt is trying to accomplish. Veidt is not a complete idiot, and it doesn't take long for him to realize what Blake's been doing. He takes care of it, if you know what I mean.

Rorschach then jumps to some major conclusions, which I guess is good, because it sets the plot of the film in motion.

"9/11 is a shitty excuse for not giving me a fucking massacre in the streets," says an acne-ridden teen from his mother's basement. "Also, world peace is hella lame and makes no sense in this context."

Veidt destroys several cities, only one of which is New York. Some of the others are Los Angeles, Moscow and Shanghai. Tokyo, too maybe? I don't remember.

In the comic, he transports a giant squid into the middle of the city. The psychic shock (what?) kills everyone, and there is bedlam in the streets. Bodies are piled everywhere, infamously. In the film, Veidt uses Manhattan's explodey powers, and everyone in every city disintegrates. This is shown in the film -- clothes, skin, muscle, skeletons, then nothing. There are no bodies, only rubble and destruction. Manhattan and Laurie transport back into the city and it is shown in ruins.

Several major countries were attacked by something uncontrollable (Doctor Manhattan). In the wake of this tragedy, they come together and the horrors of nuclear war are realized. While most countries were attacked, America was attacked twice (NY + LA), allowing them to be victims as well, despite their connection to Manhattan.

Also everyone thinks that if Manhattan sees the world acting like assholes again, he'll wipe out even more cities, so everyone's really nice to each other. The end.

THIS JUST IN: Entitled geeks make me super angry. Open-minded geeks, however, are invited to come over for punch and pie.
