I've just gotten the Sapphire and Steel special edition box set the one that's half the size of the original two and actually has special features, like a brand new spanking interview documentary with DMc, Joanna Lumley, P.J. Hammond and Shaun O'Riordan.
Everyone was saying how good and friendly DMc was and how he was the perfect person for the part, and he seems to have been their first choice for the role, as I believe Joanna was.
I was really creeped out when they started talking about the contact lenses which Joanna wore for when Sapphire's eyes turned blue, they made her see red after they were removed and I don't even want to go into the black ones. I could never wear contact lenses, the thought of putting anything in my eyes like that seems unbearable to me.
Joanna talked about Steel being irritated by Sapphire because he's always light years ahead of her character and about Steel needing Sapphire to do all the donkey work. That she is the maiden tied to a rock for the dragon, that she was always pushed out in front. I must admit that none of that ever occurred to me. (I did realise Sapphire seemed to be doing a lot of the work- I hadn't realised it was the donkey work though)
Well according to P.J. it was actually DMc who was responsible for the way S&S ended. He wanted Silver to be with them in the room, whereas DMc felt it should be S&S on their own and P.J. was overruled (by the producers if I remember rightly). He was going to put Silver with them as a way out of the trap (which I would have liked to have happened because the ending was utterly shocking), so that they could get out of the room. Still in my own personal S&S time line, some time after the credits have rolled, they hear a rattling on the door and it's Silver, he's managed to find them to let them out.
I think the commentary on the first episode was slightly wasted. They didn't have the sound turned down enough on the action and I could hardly hear what was being said. Plus I kept getting distracted by the action and had to keep rewinding if I heard any interesting bits. I hope the commentary on the last episode will be a little better.
I was re-watching the first adventure and I have a slight problem with Lead. I like him when he's doing all of that "You tell him Sapphire, he shouldn't be doing that below zero stuff without me." But the bits where he's laughing a lot when Steel is trying to discuss important aspects of the mission, it just strikes me as off somehow, like he's not taking it very seriously which Sapphire and Steel obviously are. They have him smashing down doors even though we've seen Sapphire unlocking them (of course if they were sparing her the contact lenses on her poor eyes then yes I'm all for it). But isn't Steel meant to be super strong? Couldn't he have opened the door himself? I mean in adventure 3 he's pulling up a lift to tie a knot in it. Of course I suppose they hadn't defined all of their various skills at that point. I do wonder how Steel manages to get himself down to absolute zero though, is he meant to be using that fridge (I mean we do see him fiddling with it but I don't think it'll go that low somehow), though I kind of thought it was meant to be a natural skill. He doesn't appear to be anywhere near the fridge later on in episode 6. I think I would have liked to see more of the freezing stuff. We never actually see Steel using many different skills. He has the strength and the freezing thing, but other than that it's just the telepathy which they both do.
It rather seems like in adventure 2 Steel is having a little too much fun with that drum*G* Yes, I realise that DMc is very musical and was probably enjoying himself but I'm not sure that it might be slightly out of character for the stiff and serious Steel. I think I'll be cringing a bit when I get to the bit with Sapphire's black eyes, knowing now what it really was. Oh and apparently Joanna came in with her hair cut off and dyed brown just before they were due to film the second adventure, so she was wearing a wig. Adventure 2 isn't my favourite episode though, I like it until it gets to the last episode and then I was rather shocked what Steel does to Tully the first time I saw it. I kept thinking he had some trick up his sleeve that he wasn't really turning him over to the darkness.
I don't remember that much about adventures 3, 4 & 5 so I'll leave them until after I've watched them I think. Adventure 6 is one of my least favourite adventures, mainly because of the trap, which I've mentioned earlier.
