In The Farmland, Far Far Away
By: Sharl
“Psst! Kyuhyun! Wake up!” A whisper and a shake.
Kyuhyun mumbled something unintelligently and went back to snuggle with his leafy bedding. His chosen-spot to sleep was a perfect one: the leaf was cool and comforting, no direct sunlight and it’s not even touched by any morning dews! Because unlike any other strawberry fairies, Kyuhyun hated morning dews. They were cold, cold and cold.
He wanted something warm but not as warm as sunlight either.
“Come on! Kyuhyun you have to wake up!” The whisper and the shake continued. “We have to go! Farmer Siwon will water the fields soon!”
Kyuhyun frowned. At last he sighed and grumbled and glared at the tall pale form of his best friend, Changmin, who was looking at him with annoyed eyes. Kyuhyun asked with a yawn. “Have you tended to the strawberries, Min?”
Changmin crossed his arms and said smugly. “I have done my part. My strawberries are juicy, ripe and red.” He then added with a cough. “Yours however, are still green and young.”
“Why are you not tending to my strawberries as well?”
“Because those are your responsibilities! The elder will get mad at you if you don’t tend to them. Now get your fat red ass out of that bedding and do your job!” Changmin stomped his legs once. He pouted, expanded his wings and flew away. Trail of dirt followed him behind.
Kyuhyun huffed and pouted. Stood up, he stretched. Well, now I’d better go to work. Ah, how my life is tough as a strawberry fairy.

-The Next Day-
Changmin scowled at the sleeping form of his fellow strawberry fairy. It was the next morning and as usual, Kyuhyun slept in again.
He contemplated whether he should wake his friend or not, because maybe it’s a good thing if The Elder got mad at Kyuhyun. Maybe that way his friend wouldn’t dare sleep in anymore. Flying down to the rabbit hole Kyuhyun was in, Changmin crept closer to his friend.
He then yawned. Oh well, I woke up too early today and now I’m sleepy. Looking at the comfortable leafy bedding that Kyuhyun was sleeping in, Changmin found his resolution wavered. The bedding definitely looked tempting. Maybe he should wake Kyuhyun up and he himself should go back to sleep. He had worked hard yesterday after all and by right he should be rewarded.
Besides, the sun isn’t high yet. There will be plenty of time to do our jobs later.
Changmin then flew towards his friend, crept on the leafy bedding and snuggled with him. Hmmm, Kyuhyun might be lazy and fat but he’s smart at finding out the best hiding/sleeping/relaxing place like this. The bedding was warm yet cool at the same time. Protected from the sun, it’s a perfect place to rest.
And so the two strawberry fairies folded their wings and slept; cuddling with each other.
The next thing they knew, there were thumping sounds, loud like a thunder in their fairies ears. Changmin and Kyuhyun woke up at once, their eyes panicking because what could that sound be? Always the braver one, Changmin got up to his feet and expanded his wings.
He flew away from the rabbit hole and looked around, determined to find out where those horrible sounds coming from. The sky was clear and blue, the sun shone bright so it couldn’t be the rain.
And then he found it. Farmer Siwon was approaching, wooden baskets laden with ripe, juicy strawberries in his hand. Oh no, Changmin thought, I forgot today is harvest day.
“Changmin?” he heard Kyuhyun whispered in his ear and he sounded terrified.
Turning, Changmin acted fast and pushed Kyuhyun back into the rabbit hole. “Quick! Hide in there! He can’t find us!” No human should ever find them. They were strawberry fairies, they were supposed to work and helped humans without being found. Ever.
“Changmin! What about you?”
“Don’t worry about me, now go!”
Nodded, Kyuhyun flew deeper into the rabbit hole. He knew Changmin would be alright. Changmin was smart. Although he was a pale, thin strawberry, Changmin was always smart. He thought quickly on his wings and he would’ve found another place to hide.
Kyuhyun bit his lip, praying that what he thought was correct. He could hear Farmer Siwon’s thundering footsteps grew closer and Kyuhyun curled further to himself, his body shook from fear.
+
Changmin looked around in panic. Farmer Siwon was approaching fast and Changmin hadn’t found any place to hide.
At this rate, I’ll get caught. He flew between bushes of strawberry plants, searching for a rabbit hole but alas, he found none. Rabbits are notorious for making holes everywhere but somehow he couldn’t find one! Feeling frustrated, Changmin flew deeper.
And then he got the perfect idea.
He should’ve posed as a strawberry! Yes, why didn’t he think about it earlier? It’s a perfect hiding spot! And wasn’t that what his parents always say? That you should hide in places so likely to be found because no one would’ve thought that you hide there!
Grinning now, Changmin spotted a nearby strawberry bush and posed between the leaves. He chose the outer bush, making sure that he’s in line of Farmer Siwon’s sight. Changmin was always a pale, thin strawberry so Farmer Siwon wouldn’t be interested in picking him. Of course Farmer Siwon would choose those juicy, ripe, red strawberries.
As Farmer Siwon’s footsteps grew louder, Changmin posed perfectly still. He couldn’t move, otherwise Farmer Siwon would know it’s a fairy.
He could hear him approaching fast. Farmer Siwon was humming now, singing human songs that Changmin never heard before.
Changmin could see Farmer Siwon’s hands now and yes, as what he had thought, Farmer Siwon was choosing those fat red strawberries. Those were the ripe ones, and could fetch a good price. Those thin ones wouldn’t be…
Wait. Why was Farmer Siwon picking up the thin, not-so-ripe strawberries?
Oh no, was Changmin’s last thought as Farmer Siwon’s big hand picked him up and dumped him into the wooden basket.
+
Kyuhyun peeked from the rabbit hole, his wings fluttering in worry. “Changmin?” he asked in whisper.
There was no Changmin.
Instead there were no strawberries at all. The whole farm looked like a hurricane had just come through, or at least that’s how it was from Kyuhyun’s mini-view.
“Changmin?” he called out.
Still there was no answer and there was no Changmin everywhere.
Kyuhyun expanded his wings and began to fly around the strawberry bushes. Where was his best friend? He looked around here and there. He flew high and low, wings fluttering in rapid rate.
“Changmin?”
This time he was near tears when once again there was no answer.
+
Changmin opened his eyes and blinked once. And then he blinked twice.
Ugh, where the hell was he? Looking around he saw hundreds, if not thousand strawberries around him. All of them are ripe, juicy, red, fat strawberries. Perfect for harvest and they should fetch a good price. So why the hell was he here again?
He opened up his wings and (tried to) picked up a strawberry but the strawberry was too heavy so Changmin fell flat on his flat ass.
Scowling, he cursed Kyuhyun in his mind because this was all Kyuhyun’s fault. If Kyuhyun didn’t wake up late, they wouldn’t be late and as a result they wouldn’t have to hide and Changmin wouldn’t have to pose like a strawberry and Farmer Siwon wouldn’t pick him up and drop him in the wooden basket which he was currently in.
Suddenly the world shook.
Changmin paled and hang onto a fat red strawberry for his dear life. Oh no, was the world ending? What was happening?
“Great! I’ll see you again in the next harvest, Junsu!” he heard Farmer Siwon’s cheerful voice boomed.
Junsu? That was the name of the trader right? The one who always came during harvest season and bought a lot of strawberries? Yeah, Changmin had seen him a few times and he remembered him as that human with funny butt and squeaky voice.
“Sure, thanks Siwon!” See? That’s the squeaky voice.
Wait. If Junsu was here then it meant that he’s buying harvested strawberries and that would’ve explained all the strawberries in this wooden box and why the world shook. Added everything together, it could only mean one thing.
Changmin was sold.
Changmin was fucking sold.
+
Kyuhyun huffed and puffed and pouted seeing the humongous house in front of him.
Why was it that human loved living in huge house? Maybe because they themselves were huge. But couldn’t they find a nice, warm rabbit hole to live in? That way Kyuhyun wouldn’t be so intimidated like he was now. But nevertheless he needed to go in.
“Don’t lose your wits Kyuhyun. Changmin is captured by the evil farmer because of you. You have to save him!” Braving himself, Kyuhyun flew through the open window. He landed on the wooden table and looked around.
Everything was big. No actually they were humongous. How could he find Changmin in here?
His heart was pounding fast and Kyuhyun tiptoed silently. If he was to find Changmin, then he’d do it as silent as possible. He didn’t need Farmer Siwon to find him because who knows, Farmer Siwon might be tempted to eat him.
Suddenly there was a horrible, horrible loud sound and Kyuhyun jumped in surprise. He turned around and literally squeaked. There was a creature. A huge white creature that looked menacing and fearsome and eewww, was that a drool?
He flew away at once, determined to find someplace to hide. Oh no, why was that horrible menacing creature keep following him?
Kyuhyun panicked. No no no no no he was gonna get eaten and this was all Changmin’s fault which was technically Kyuhyun’s fault and if only he didn’t get overslept they would not get separated and Changmin wouldn’t get kidnapped and Kyuhyun would still be alive.
“Lassie? What is it boy?”
Kyuhyun froze in mid air. And then he gulped.
Farmer Siwon stood in the doorway, appeared to be completely wide-eyed finding a flying strawberry fairy in the middle of his kitchen with a huge white creature following and chasing him. Kyuhyun squeaked and sprinted-flew, hiding behind a teapot.
“Lassie, come here boy,” Farmer Siwon whistled. And for a while Kyuhyun heard nothing. He waited and waited and waited and finally deemed it safe to go out. Maybe Farmer Siwon didn’t really see him. Maybe Farmer Siwon just thought Kyuhyun as a fly or something.
Kyuhyun peeked and very nearly squeaked again.
Farmer Siwon was looking at him, with a smile on his face. “Hello. What are you?”
His heart was beating fast but Kyuhyun managed to say, “I’m… I’m a strawberry fairy.”
“You’re a strawberry fairy? But you’re so… round. You must weigh twice as other strawberries.”
Kyuhyun scowled. He tried to look fearsome, with his hands on his hips, his eyes glared and his chest puffed out importantly. “I know that I’m fat okay! But I’m here because you’ve kidnapped my friend, my fellow strawberry fairy and I want you to release him!”
“Oh,” said Farmer Siwon, “I see. Umm… Is the other strawberry fairy, your friend, as round as you?” asked Farmer Siwon, “I don’t remember seeing any that looks like you.”
“No,” mumbled Kyuhyun, “he’s always so thin, like malnourished albino strawberry.”
“Oh! That one, yeah I think I saw him. Wait. That was a strawberry fairy? I thought it’s just a young strawberry that hasn’t matured yet. Oh damn it, I put it-him! I put him in the wooden box and I sell the whole box to Junsu.”
Kyuhyun was horrified. “You sell my friend??”
“Hey hold on, I didn’t know that he was your friend or even a strawberry fairy. I mean, who ever heard of strawberry fairy anyway?” Farmer Siwon tried to defend himself. Scratching his head awkwardly, he said again. “Okay now let me call Junsu, maybe your friend, the malnourished albino strawberry has said hi to him or something. I promise he’ll bring your friend back tomorrow.”
Kyuhyun nodded and sniffled. Poor Changmin, he must’ve been so scared. Being sold by the cruel Farmer Siwon and he was alone. This was all Kyuhyun’s fault.
And then the creature made that same horrible, loud sound and Kyuhyun jumped. “What is that thing?” he pointed towards the creature. “It’s scary.”
“…..it’s a poodle.”

“Let me out! Let me out! Now!” Changmin pounded on the wooden box. He kicked it again but when the box barely moved and all he got was pain in his toes he resumed to pounding and shouting. “Let me out you stupid human jerk with squeaky voice and funny butt, let me out now or I will-“
Suddenly the box was opened.
Changmin blinked. And blinked again. And again, because the sun was too bright in and now he had black dots in his vision.
“O-kay. Hi!” said the human with squeaky voice. “Are you the one who made that entire ruckus?”
“Ruckus? I don’t make ruckus,” Changmin scoffed indignantly.
Now that the box was opened, he expanded his wings and flew. He heard the human gasped in surprise and Changmin smirked. Ha! Served him right for capturing and kidnapping Changmin as if Changmin was a lowly gnome or something.
He was flying (floating) in the air when the human spoke again. “Wow you’re cute.”
Changmin scowled. “Shut up. I’m not cute and I’m not supposed to talk to human.”
“Why?”
Changmin opened his mouth to answer but then he frowned because actually he didn’t know the answer. Well then. That put him in uncomfortable position. Why shouldn’t the strawberry fairies talk with human? He only knew that because the Elder told him so. But why?
“Because-because humans are mean!”
The human looked hurt and pouted. “Do I look mean to you?”
Changmin took one good long look on the human, or Junsu as that was his name. Junsu looked…nice actually. A bit too big in the butt area maybe, but he didn’t look mean. In fact he looked pretty kind. Changmin gulped. “No,” he finally croaked an answer.
Junsu then smiled. His smile was so beautiful and bright Changmin thought it rivaled the sun itself. “Great! Now tell me your name. My name is Junsu and how did you end up in that box? Do you live in Siwon’s farm? Do you-“
The phone rang.

-The next morning-
“Kyuhyun!”
“Changmin!”
Kyuhyun was ecstatic when he saw Changmin flew towards him. He spread his own wings and the two strawberry fairies met in the air in the middle of Farmer Siwon’s living room. They hugged each other tight, feeling relieved that they were safe and free from harm.
“I’m glad you’re safe,” Kyuhyun whispered, “And I’m sorry I get us into trouble.”
“That’s okay Kyu,” Changmin answered, “That’s okay.”
“What should we do? The Elder will get mad at us if he knew we showed up and made friends with humans!” Kyuhyun bit his lip and he looked worried.
Changmin shook his head. “I don’t know. But, but I’m not regretting making friends with humans. I mean, they are pretty nice and I don’t understand why we are forbidden to talk with them.”
Kyuhyun also didn’t know why. But maybe it didn’t matter. Changmin was now safe and Kyuhyun was glad that his friend was safe. He was about to say something in return when he noticed a human stranger walked towards them.
“Oh, you must be Kyuhyun,” said the human stranger, “I’m Junsu and wow, you’re really round.”
+
Kyuhyun pretended not to notice when that trader came more often into the farm, even when it wasn’t the harvest season. Changmin always dropped everything he did that moment and flew towards the trader, where the trader would laugh and Changmin would play with him.
He also pretended not to notice when Farmer Siwon gave him a little wooden box to sleep in. “This must be more comfortable than the rabbit hole,” he said, “There’s the lid to keep the sunlight away and I’ve filled the box with leaves to keep you warm.”
Kyuhyun used his new bed every night.
