below the cuts

i have returned from Harvest of Hope; sun burned and exhausted. This weekend had a lot of pros and cons, i'll go to HOH next year... but only under certain circumstances, learning from my mistakes and experiences of this year. Seeing historic St Augustine, some of the bands and the 2nd Night of camping are the positives that I can remember.

friday,
began with an early morning trip to St Augustine, to check out the sites before the music festival. Along the way me and Rei stopped in Palatka to take a pictures of a very phallic looking World War II statue. Once we arrived to St Augustine, we saw the Castillo of San Marcos and walked along the historic district. Taking some pretty pictures and some with phallic jokes as well. At around 3 or 4 pm, we had to head over to HOH to get our tent erected and get our wristbands. As we drove in, the first impression of the camp area was not too great and we were swarmed with the amount of underage kids.

things were not harping so well for HOH in the beginning, but we got the tent up and decided to get drunk to deal with the negative feelings toward HOH. missing Rehasher and the Cheap Girls to get drunk, but we finally had a good drunk going in time to catch King Kahn and the Shrines.... Night Marchers were awesome, John Reis is a top notch frontman. ...skipping ahead

the stages were much closer together than i expected, so i was able to see more bands than originally planned. While Girl Talk there was a dance party onstage and well Rei had an "artists wristband" so we were able to get backstage and take part in said dance party. We would later steal a bunch of fruits and goodies from this backstage area, later on in the evening.

friday night finished with less than jake and anarchy in the campsite. fucking hippies with their drumcircles and apparently a group of kids freaking out on all sorts drugs pretty much ruined any attempt at sleep.

on to saturday.

the first half of saturday is pretty much a blur to me because the sun managed to bake my brain, and i was definitely feeling the ill effects of the immense heat. by the time the sun came down, it was time for the Bouncing Souls who played a great set and i was finally beginning to feel like a human again, rather than a thanksgiving turkey. Bad Brains were a SOLID DISAPPOINTMENT. but Against Me! playing "I Still Love You Julie" and "Walking Is Still Honest" totally made up for that. After AM!, i caught the first half hour of Lucero (who were great and i was torn about leaving) and then I ran over to see Propagandhi who did not disappoint. they played "Hajllie Sellasse" which was a total shock, i remember when i was teenager and hearing that song for the first time. i used to think that the closing part that just repeats "Fuck religion" forever was the most punk thing ever.

the second night of camping was a much better experience. me and Rei were able to sneak in Won Jun into the campsite. my goal for that night was to get obliterated, just so that i could go to sleep much easier. in retrospect, i don't think i drank to that extent. but i did end up spending the night between hanging with Won Jun, our tent neighbors (cute indie girls, not to be confused with dirty hippies) and the Tallahassee campsite. like said earlier, much better than the first night of camping.

sunday,
the sun was blaring again, but this time managed not cook my brain, so i was not that out of it. from our tent, where i was still waking up/eating PB&J sandwiches, i could hear Summerbirds in the Cellar. they were surprisingly good and this is me noting to check them out again, luckily for me they're from Florida and playing Commongrounds next month.

the bands i mostly saw on Sunday were Florida bands which i had seen before; Cutman, New Bruises, Monikers, Gatorface and Ninja Gun (who might as well be from Gainesville, not Valdosta, GA). by 6pm we had unpacked our campsite and realizing that we had seen Grabass Charlestons, Whiskey & Co, the Gaslight Anthem enough times we decided that it was time to head back home and shower.

after cleaning up, pigging out i slept for 12 hours and woke up to find out that the Gaslight Anthem are playing a free (secret) show at Commongrounds tonight. rock.
