Haha. Love it. As always, what you write as a total sense of mood to it that really transports me to your scene. This really makes me curious about what Zuko's hiding from in this universe. Lee, indeed! :D I like that Katara's from the south, but that she didn't mind her slaves going north. I hate it when southerners all get painted with the same brush, ya know? /end rant. Anyways, I would love to see more if you find the time tomorrow. Thank you for doing this!

The question made Zuko flinch. He swallowed hard, then looked up to meet Xumei's wide eyes. Across the table, Zhang scowled at his plate. "I don't know, sweetie." Mai had left only a brief note. Assignment, it'd read. Tell them I love them. She hadn't even signed it. "Soon. She misses you."
Zhang's scowl deepened, but Xumei nodded. "Will she live with us again then?"
I can't do this, Zuko. It had been raining, when she left. I can't be this.
Be what? he'd asked. He'd gone over the moment hundreds of times since, thought of everything he should have said, but still couldn't see himself saying anything else.
This. Everything. She had shrugged and her voice hadn't changed, but Zuko had seen the tension in her shoulders, the tremble in her hands. Wife. Mother. She'd turned then, and tears had glistened in her eyes. I can't do this. I've tried.
She had tried, he realized now. She had tried PTA meetings and anti-depressants, a law degree and a stint as the director of an art ( ... )

Zuko grit his teeth. "Such is the nature of undercover work," he ground out before he could stop himself - but then realized his cover was blown, anyway, and he couldn't afford their usual sniping.
"You ass," she started, but cut off as they both heard footsteps pounding up the complex stairwell. Katara's eyes widened, then narrowed. "They know," she said simply, but he was already running for the kitchen and the stairs beyond it ( ... )

- The number one thing I'd AU in canon: Katara healing Jet under Lake Laogai. It works! Jet joins the GAang! And through a logical sequence of events, the sexiest capture scenario ever ensues: The Jetkotara Cave! ;)
- Are you perhaps familiar with Samurai Champloo? Because Zuko, Jet and Katara would make an awesome OT3, wandering the countryside in search of the sunflower samurai... *koff*Avatar*koff*

Jet grinned to himself, careful not to let Zuko see the expression. It wasn't hard to hide, given how Zuko had him shoved up against the wall.
"I don't know what she sees in you." Zuko continued, his voice soft. Dangerous. "I know you're up to something, and I know she's too caring to tell you to go fuck yourself."
"So is this you telling me to go fuck myself?" Jet asked, keeping the laughter from his voice. "I don't think Katara will appreciate that - she can protect herself."
Zuko pushed his head against the wall; only the proximity made it not a slam. "I know she can protect herself. She doesn't need my help any more than she needs yoursZuko twisted Jet's arm behind him farther, just barely ( ... )

In a nutshell, Lu Ten never dies. Iroh does.
I hate myself for saying that because who doesn't love Uncle? But all in the name of an AU meme, I suppose...
Implications are vast. Azulon never tells Ozai to kill Zuko. Zuko never sits in on the war meeting (or does he?). He doesn't make finding the Avatar his lifelong mission (again, or does he?) You could take it anywhere. It'd be interesting to see something on how skewed the FN royal politics would be if that single switch had been made in the history. (:
