It kinda sucked.
But the biggest spoiler for me was the movie itself. Let's start with the beginning. There's some lightning crisis, and then the ground starts cracking and bubbling. Here is where there were some direction flaws. Now we all know that in this sort of situation, the only people sticking around would be those lacking melanin. Black people would either
a. run, or
b. loot.
However, everybody, white, Black and Latino, joined together to idiotically wait as one for their impending destruction. So unrealistic, but then it was kind of good, because retards like that deserved to die.
Now, the biggest complaint I have with the movie was the poor character development. Two of the characters are really annoying and irritating, and the third just isn't interesting enough to draw concern. There were three main characters: Ray (Tom Cruise), his son Robbie and his daughter Rachel. We know nothing of Ray except he does some manual labour thing which I forget. What we quickly learn about Robbie is that he's the stereotypical son of a divorced couple - angry at his dad. But not always, sometimes he's just quiet and stupid, but the other times he's rude and disrespectful. Now Rachel, at the beginning, is funny and cool. At the beginning.
Then she turns into this screechy stupid little white girl. She's screeching throughout a third of the movie. It's so irritating. Once, when her dad finally tells her to STFU, she just starts squealing even more. After about ten minutes of her, you start hoping that she'll die.
Now Robbie is like, Hey I'm a macho man, I'll fight these robot things that vaporise people and buildings within nanoseconds, cause I'm that tough and brave. So he keeps bitching to his dad about how he's gonna go and fight, and then finally, he goes to join the army, and about three seconds later is consumed by a ball of flames. You're like, finally, one down, two to go.
So then Rachel and Ray go into this house with a crazy man, played by Tim Robbins, who is pretty much of the same mindset as Robbie. He dies later than one would wish.
Finally, Rachel is captured by the robot things. This is where she's most annoying, because now instead of screaming in a steady stream of annoyance, she only screams intermittently, so her dad can't find her. But she gets captured, so you're like sweet, that girl's dead. But she doesn't die. And neither does Ray when he gets captured a few seconds later. Yeah, totally weak.
So then later, the monsters die suddenly, and Rachel and Ray go to Boston to meet the wife. And who's there, but Robbie. Somehow, the large wall of flames missed him, and the vaporisers which killed hundreds of millions of people, also failed to get him. Apparently he's Jesus.
Then the movie ends, and the voiceover guy is like, the bacteria killed the monsters. WEAK. They hardly even showed the aliens, either. Just in this one scene about 1.5 minutes long, where the one alien is like "hey check this out... it's a picture of a family" and he gives the foto to the other alien, and the other alien is like "cool, a foto." and then they're called back to the ship.
It sucked.
