Mom's surgery and optimism

Jun 03, 2010 10:11

Mom's surgery yesterday morning went very well.

They ended up having to do more extensive surgery than first planned, so Mom will be in hospital for at least five days, but the surgeon reported that the cancer had not spread to any dangerous areas (like her spleen) and that Mom is an excellent candidate for the newfangled chemo treatment they were proposing.

What a relief. We were worried about what might be revealed once the surgeon actually went in--the scans are only accurate to a degree.

Mom was looking better than I expected when she finally came out of Recovery and was transferred to her room. She was awake, relatively alert despite the painkillers, and I stayed until about 8:30 pm, feeding her ice chips and a bit of Jello.

I'm going back to the hospital after work today.

real life, mom
