Moving Day [Locked to batbutler]

The house sprawled. Even though she didn't mind stairs, Shard had gone for a ranch style house with beach access. There were five bedrooms, along with 'maid's quarters'. Which was basically a small suite with access from outside and an en suite bathroom. There was also an acre and a half of land that the house sat on, so there was plenty of room ( Read more... )

Alfred cleared his throat as he entered, a quiet way of announcing his presence. He took a good look at everything around, occasionally nodding his approval and very discreetly his head once or twice.

"It's a beautiful home." He smiled.

"I was afraid it was too much, actually," she said, rubbing the back of her head. "Then again, I have no idea how much space I really need. I've never really had more than a room to myself, you know? This is...a lot different."

"I can imagine it could be unsettling. But if you are expecting frequent company, it's well worth while."

"And hopefully Master Bruce thinks the same."

Shard nods, hands behind her back. "Well, I have enough friends in the Nexus and back home, I'll probably have a fair amount of people in and out." She sighs, smiling a bit. "I hope he likes it, too. I couldn't do much about the cave system, but...I hope he'll be comfortable here."

"If I had to guess, I'd say he would be, but nothing stops you from asking yourself."

"Shall I familiarize myself with the surroundings, or is there a tour?"

"Hmm?" Shard blinked a few times, then ohed softly. "Right, tour. I can do that." She wasn't used to this. Might never be. She'd hired Alfred because he needed someplace after being shut out of his world and Bruce liked him. That went a long way.

She looked around a moment. "Well, the living room through to the kitchen is pretty open plan." There was a line of cabinets separating the kitchen from the rest of the room, with a bit of overhang for a breakfast bar. The floor was hardwood throughout. "There's a second reception room toward the pool area that I'm thinking of putting bookshelves in." She started walking that direction, babbling on about what was in the house. She'd memorized the specs.

Alfred nodded his approval at the idea of a library. He was willing to wager that both he and Bruce could do with some reading material. He'd be fairly silent during the tour, though, just absorbing things for later. He wouldn't really know the place until he'd cleaned it.

"What I don't get," Shard said, leading them out to the backyard, "is why someone would have a pool when the ocean is right there?" 'Right there' being a good couple hundred feet away, of course. "Anyway, there are four bedrooms and two bathrooms. And your rooms, which have their own bed and bath."

As for the library, there would likely be a lot of ordering from Amazon. And prodding both Bruce and Alfred for lists of books that they wanted.

"Some people can't stand the thought of swimming in natural water, no matter how much they like to look at it."

He nodded his thanks. "I'll head there shortly. Has the kitchen been stocked, or will I need to tend to that?"

Alfred would be more than happy to oblige that part.

"I...no, not really." She flushes a little bit. "I brought over sandwich stuff. And cereal and milk. Other than that? Not so much at the moment." Really, she figured Alfred would have a better idea of what he needed than she would.

"That may be the next order of business, then."

"Any recipes you're particularly fond of, ma'am?" He had some pretty good guesses for Bruce, but Shard was an unknown quantity.

Shard coughed a bit. "Like I said, I...don't really cook. So I'm perfectly willing to try anything once. Somehow, I doubt that institutional food is a good thing to judge by, anyway." After a moment, she added, "Though, Bruce has introduced me to hot dogs and macaroni and cheese. Which is pretty good."

Alfred laughed, audible only as a brief snort and visible only as a slight shake of the head, then nodded. "Then shall we have that tonight?"

Shard chuckled, ducking her head a bit. "That would be fine, I think. We can certainly expand things starting tomorrow." She went over to her purse and pulled out her wallet, looking through for a moment before pulling out a card. "I've already got the household account set up. The bank suggested it. We'll have to go in tomorrow to get you signed on to the account and all, but the pin number is on the paper around it."
