Game of Thrones Season 8 Ep 2

Quick review post.

Spoilers behind cut.

Another sort-of introductory episode, probably the last one which isn't going to be entirely taken up with big battles and in which actual conversations are possible.

And some very important conversations in this one- Dany/Jorah, for instance, when Jorah defends Tyrion to her, and the Dany/Sansa one which follows. Not to mention the whole scene where Sansa-overriding Dany because of her faith in Brienne - decides to spare Jaime Lannister and let him fight for them, and the Jaime knights Brienne scene. Also some lovely little vignettes, like Jorah/Lyanna Mormont, and Sam, Jon and (I had to look his name up, which is bad) Eddison, the three surviving members of the Nightswatch reuniting on the wall of Winterfell.

Must admit, though, I liked some people's way of spending the last night before possibly dying a little better than others. In particular, I didn't like the Arya/Gendry sex scene - not because it was a sex scene between these two characters, but because Maisie Williams -despite now being twenty-two years old (or twenty-one when this was filmed, I suppose) still looks about twelve. And okay, I know the full nude moment was a body double (you could tell when they were swapped), but even so I found it ickworthy. :(

And, of course, there was that all-important revelation between Jon and Dany at the end, which was interrupted by the arrival of the Night King's army. It was noticeable that Dany seized instantly on the fact that Jon has a claim to the Iron Throne, but there really wasn't time to judge how well or ill she handled it. I suppose we'll see in the next episode - whether or not she tries to get him killed in the coming battle.

As for that, I suspect a lot of characters aren't going to survive it, and that includes quite a few who've been around right from the beginning. I don't want Grey Worm to die but have a horrible feeling he will. Possibly Jorah too. And maybe Theon. Couldn't guess about others, but plenty of them are expendable plot-wise, even if lots of viewers like them and don't want them to die.

As far as eventual outcomes go, I'm still none the wiser, but - if Tyrion and Jorah are at all right about Dany - then the abortive conversation between Dany and Sansa does suggest a hint of a way forward. Dany and Jon could divide Westeros between them, Dany getting the southern half and Jon the north, since the northerners all want independence.

It sounds too reasonable, though, and how do you define 'the north' anyway?. Far more likely to all end in tears.

Trivial stuff:

Erm...nothing comes to mind immediately.
