taliestin: personified kilgara? IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME RIGHT. THIS IS WHERE MAGIC BEGAN: CRYSTAL CAVE. OLD!MERLIN FORESHADOWING! PERHAPS THERE WAS A REASON YOU WERE BROUGHT HERE IN THIS MOMENT IN TIME. (IT'S OFFICAL, MERLIN IS SUPERMAN. HE HAS "SPLIT LIVES", A CAVE OF KNOWLEDGE AND CRYSTALS. ALL HE NEEDS IS SOME HIPSTER!GLASSES. OR MAYBE HIS NECKERCHIEF IS HIS "GLASSES".)
I was really intrigued by Taliesin, and his place in this particular telling of the legends. When he said "if my memory serves" did he mean that he had read about this in the legends? had lived through this before? knew from the old religion gurus? All very interesting and seemed more than a plot device. Loved the interaction between him and Merlin, if for nothing more than their dynamic being like between two grand wizards having a chat. It gave me great hope for our Merlin and the prospect of taking his rightful place in history as we know it.
And finally, somehow Colin managed to have great (acting) chemistry with Taliesin within 5 seconds of their first meeting. Seriously, he has chemistry with everything on this show, even the CGI. Freak. [Makes him a great show lead though].
When Taliesin was a child, Cerridwen set him to stirring a cauldron full of a magical potion that was meant to give her son great wisdom. Taliesin accidently spilled some on his fingers and he sucked them which gave HIM the wisdom. Cerridwen is very angry....etc.
So, I think that Taliesin knows what has passed, what is and what will come into being simply because he is Taliesin. I think that they brought him into this story quite wonderfully.
And bringing in the Crystal Cave was really nice because for so many older Arthurian fans, the first book we read about Merlin was Mary Stewart's Crystal Cave.
Taliesin isn't Kilgarra anthromorphized. If you wiki him, you'll see he's a historical figure who in legend has ties to King Arthur's court.
And Superman stole the idea of crystal cave from Merlin. The crystal cave as a source of Merlin's powers is old in legend and has been recently retold in The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart.
