arthur throwing stuff/generally being mean to merlin. WE'RE FOUR EPISODES IN AND THIS HAS BEEN A REGULAR OCCURRENCE: Do you still think it's in-character? Did you used to think that but now see it as abuse? Or did you previously think it was malicious and now see it as friendly teasing? Or has it always been, and always be, a douchebag thing that you can't wait for the writers to drop?
I thought it was simply because Arthur does not realize that people have different ouch factors. His is, quite naturally, very high. I also find Arthur still quite immature, so shoving and throwing is still in character for him. Well, that is just what I think...
This is not friendly teasing. You don't throw metal objects to someone's head whilst their head is turned. I'm sad to say this moment ruined a lot of the A/M banter for me. It's quite depressing.
Arthur really does not get it. He can hurt someone but he is so used to being battered that he does not notice or care.
It does seem an interesting contrast to what he did in the beginning episode. It seems in some situations when he is not being himself and being a Prince, he will change gears.
In all fairness...I think it does send a bad message to their younger audience...as though hitting and being a bully is ok.
From where I sit in my advanced years, I can see what is going on with Arthur's character, but I do agree that it is not really necessary at this point.
In short; I want the writers to drop it yesterday. It's getting to a point where it's ruining my A/M enjoyment completely, and it reads as plain and ugly abuse. I feel less enthused by season 3 Arthur by the minute, and that makes me sad. :-/
I am thinking what Bradley will say about this hitting thing? I think he definitely will loathe it. COME ON, Merlin writers, what are you thinking and doing? Totally not logic and not funny at ALL.
- well, there's a provocative statement. Merlin's got it rather good with Arthur relative to other servants (don't take my word for it, ask Gaius) and this what you came up with?
Someone PM'd me and asked that I put up this topic, and that was the wording they used. I always try to use the exact wording someone gives me when they present a topic, so there you go.
I haven't said my feelings on the matter (either feeling this is OOC/douche-y or just male bonding and how arthur shows his affection [re: he doesn't treat all the servants like this!]) and don't really plan to, in order to keep up the modly objectivity. So, yeah, I wasn't trying to ~*~sway the conversation~*~ or anything, that was just the topic and how it was presented to me.
