merlin: the last true dragonlord. HE SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO SLASH DRAGON. TRUST: A DOUBLE EDGED SWORD. MERLIN'S NEED TO SEE GOODNESS WILL BE HIS UNDOING. MORGANA: THE DARKNESS/HATE TO MERLINS LIGHT/LOVE. MERLIN: HE'S ON A DRAGON MOTHERF**KERS
I know Merlin has been a dragonlord for about a minute, but I really wish they would show his powers and magic to be a bit more consistent. The end of S2 was spine-tinglingly good and now Merlin is being thwarted by chains bought from a medieval B&Q, couldn't beat a bunch of bones apparently and did nothing about the siege. Being a dragonlord isn't proving all that useful apparently.
That said, my one smidgen of hope is how Merlin never seemed in the remotest danger during the Morgana face-off in the crypt, it may have been how Colin played it, but it just seemed like he was toying with her for fun, rather than her truly challenging him on any level..and oddly, as a result of this episode, I found Uberconfident!Merlin is phenomenally hot.
Also? Morgana really blew it when she said that Merlin couldn't understand what it was like to have magic. Complete fail there, Seer...

I saw that, too. Merlin's been practicing his magic since his first week in Camelot (and unoffically before that, right?), add on to that this whole ~*~gap year~*~ he's had to practice his magic and Dragonlord skills; it's undoubtedly cannon that he would be more powerful than her (Plus, Morgana doesn't seem to be all to confident with magic despite her having a year to practice, too. She still fights with a sword? Obviously her talents aren't as well trained...) and was just playing along until he could do magic without her seeing.
I believe Morgana said her magic was weak when she met Morgause and recieved the Rowan staff.
A whole year and her magic is still weak...I wonder if we will see her doing any at all. Like last year she blew up a vase and caused a fire and then exhibited no magical traits at all for the rest of the season. Not even her old dreams of the future.
I really want to see some more pwoerful magic from Merlin but I fear it won't be this season. He is supposed to be really special but as yet there's nothing to really mark him out as different from Mordred or Morgause.
Plus he is supposed to have the pwoer of life and death and hasn't used that since he did so accidentally at the end of season 1.
I agree though it did seem as if he was toying with Morganan a little. Which was good to see.
I think Morgana is blinded to everything but her own fear and hate. If she connected the dots she would guess Merlin has magic but she never does.
No, I suspect we won't see much this season at all, well, until the final few seconds of the last episode like the last couple of seasons. I find this aspect of the series more frustrating than the secret-keeping to be honest: Occasionally I see the Powerful!Merlin of the legends, and think 'Yes! They've got it!" but then it returns to Merlin tripping over his own feet, being trapped in an unlikely situation and suddenly unable to save himself from other people's weak magic. I miss the Merlin which could summon thunder and lightening just because he was angry.
Just on a side shallow note: I really want an episode where we get to see Merlin in a cloak with one of those magical Camelot hoods (the ones where if you wear it up, noone will recognise you. Evidence see: Arthur being a commoner, Morgana in every episode etc).
Sadly I susecpt you are correct. It is so frustrating because we know Merlin is capable of more and we want to see him do more. He is supposed to be this great powerful wizard and you just don't get to see it.
Oh yes! I'd love to see that. Merlin in a cloak could do so much sneaking about.
I loved Merlin's, " I have no intention of walking" and the little smirk he did(Colin Morgan you kill me!) And the whole riding the dragon scene was epic!!!!
Was going to comment on that bit as well. His mischievous little elf face as he said that.
... and the dragon had to come when the dragon lord commanded, but the dragon seems to have some genuine fondness for Merlin. I know, a reptile, what do they know about affection, but maybe Merlin has rubbed off on him?
HE SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO SLASH DRAGON.
TRUST: A DOUBLE EDGED SWORD.
MERLIN'S NEED TO SEE GOODNESS WILL BE HIS UNDOING.
MORGANA: THE DARKNESS/HATE TO MERLINS LIGHT/LOVE.
MERLIN: HE'S ON A DRAGON MOTHERF**KERS
