Merlin S3 Premiere
Big day! As you all probably know by now, series three of Merlin premieres this evening! UK fans will be able to watch the episode as it airs, but sadly, fans in other countries do not (legally) have the same opportunity. We want to give everyone a fair amount of time to watch and/or download the episode before we put up an official reactions post, and thus we are going to wait exactly three hours after the episode initially starts before we do so. This is done so that we all have time to digest the scenes and gather our thoughts.
Plenty of other Merlin communities have As-It-Happens posts for people who are watching the eps on television/live feeds, and these posts basically consist of members making running commentary on what’s happening. This is a great and fun tool for UK fans and anyone who wants to take a peek at spoilers, but as we are primarily a discussion community, we want to do things a little differently. This may leave UK fans a little starved for immediate discussion @
shapingdestiny, but again, there are loads of other places for instant live blogging!
By contrast,
shapingdestiny is going to host episode after-parties. Us mods will start by introducing some episode-specific discussion topics as comment threads, and members are totally welcome to respond and/or start their own. These topics and comments don’t always have to be serious, analytical or all about meta! It’s okay if your responses are more squee than coherence. Everyone has their style!
The lovely
perv is hosting the after-party tonight, and she put together this beautiful coding!
Comment threads by moderators will use the big and shiny font you see above. If you start a comment thread and also want to make your font all big and shiny, no one is going to stop you. ;) You’re allowed to format thread headings however you want, really. Most people just use the subject line, lol, but we’ve decided to go all fancy. WE’RE NERDS LIKE THAT.
I know the following is stated in the screenshot, but here it is once more (with feeling!): This format? Does not mean that only moderators can start discussion threads. It also doesn’t mean that members can’t make separate posts to talk about the episode. While episode after-parties will be permanently open to comments, we know that the entry’s activity won’t last all week. It goes like this: the episodes always air on Saturday, right? Say you think of a discussion topic regarding the recent ep on Monday. There’s a fair chance people may not be regularly checking the original after-party entry, so no one is going to harp on you if you make a separate discussion post. Make sense? Truthfully, the official after-party post exists only to have a guaranteed and organized entry on a weekly basis, but it’s not the ONLY place you’re allowed to start episode discussion.
I know this all probably sounds more complex than it actually is, but let’s try it before we knock it. If the after-party idea isn’t successful, we’ll try another format next week! And if you are confused by the after-party format, please do not hesitate to ask us questions in the comments. :D
