OOM: plotting a course

May 17, 2006 11:31

Tahiri punches the hyperdrive as soon as the ship breaks the planet's gravity well, not caring where they go just as long as they get away. Ten minutes later, orbiting a star whose name she doesn't know, she starts a conversation with the navicomp.

They're in a system just a few lightyears to the Galactic north of Ossus, on the Perlemian Trade Route. They can follow this spacelane all the way in to Courscant, use it to swing around the edge of the Deep Core and come out on the other side of the Koornacht Cluster in the Farlax Sector. That would put them shoulder to shoulder with the Unknown Regions...

But the Unknown Regions are so big. There's no guarantee that Zonama Sekot will be there when they pop out of hyperspace. She could be anywhere, from the old Ssi-Ruuk territories to Chiss space. Tahiri remembers that it hadn't taken long to get to the Killiks when she and Tekli had left the planet... if worse comes to worse, she can find the sites of the old nests and trace their path back from there.

She hopes, though, that once they're that close the ship might feel Sekot's presence and give her a better idea of where to go.

Satisfied now that they have a clear direction, Tahiri programs in a series of long, slow jumps so that the ship won't strain herself. The lights on the console are already starting to dim as she draws power for the first hyperspace jump.

Tahiri twists around in her chair, pulling her bag into her lap. It contains all that she owns in the entire universe-- her lightsaber, another jumpsuit, a datapad, a few trinkets picked up around Milliways. No robeskin, not any longer, and the most important thing-- a pad of flimsy paper and a stylus made of charcoal.

Watching the stars dance through the swirl of hyperspace, she begins to draw.
