La Cage Aux Folles

... so i was kinda reluctant to watch La Cage ... I think its signature anthem I Am What I Am is simply a dreadful overwrought number that has been done-to-death with varying degrees of success by drag queens over the years ... while I appreciated the attempt to localize the story to make it more identifiable to a Singapore audience, it was however not a Singapore (or a Tanjong Pagar) that I recognised ... unfortunately, Aaron Khaled came across as a selfish brat and it seemed hard to reconcile his behavior with someone brought up in a loving environment by two homosexual men ... visually the show looks very lush ... big sets, lovely costumes, appropriate lighting ... but somehow the intimate story about love seems to be lost on the cavernous Esplanade theatre stage.
