Happy New Year And Happy Birthday!

I’ve been such a slack-ass with this blog thing, so now I have to update you since last year!

New Year’s Eve I spent with Edels, HissyKitty and her partner S. We all dressed up and went to a goth club. For anyone unfamiliar with the goth subculture this is it in a nutshell: A goth is someone who dresses up in black and the men often wear as much makeup as the women. It is all part of being on show; most goths feel they are, or at least should be, the centre of the world. It's a very snobby subculture that pretends to be exclusive but really anyone with the right clothes can join. There is now a new generation of goths called emo’s. But I feel I really should qualify these statements by saying I have never been a goth or part of any contrived elite subculture so these are opinions based on what goths appear to be to me. Anyway, my friend Hissykitty and her partner, along with Edels and I, thought it might be fun to dress up and go to a goth New Year’s Eve club in the city, so we did. That night it was fun and very silly. We took a train into the city and sat near a large group of Indians (Hindu's); Indians are often perplexed by goths as it is such an alien subculture to them, so they were noticeably a bit tense. Then Hissykitty, S. and Edels started talking about a recent Hindi movie we had seen and were raving on and on about it. They hadn't noticed the Indians at this stage. We were all trying to remember the Hindi name for the film (which in English translates pretty much as I Am Here Now) when Edels proudly announced Main Hoon Na. The Hindu's almost fell apart with laughter - it was a brilliant moment. I think that was the highlight of the night.

By the way, if you would like to take a look at contemporary Bollywood at its best, hunt down Main Hoon Na and watch it. Standard Bollywood movies seem to be rated between PG (parental guidance) and M (mature), as there is never any sex (not even kissing) but they usually contain graphic violence. Main Hoon Na is mostly a funny musical love story with a positive political message. As far as I know, all Bollywood DVDs have English subtitles, so if you go into an Indian marketplace or store and they have DVDs for sale or rent you should be able to watch any of them.

This year has been a bit crazy as Edels had been really stressed, exacerbated no thanks to a counsellor he saw that told him it was a possibility that he couldn’t trust me!?! Also, Mum and one of my sisters are stuck in psychologically and socially abusive relationships (they’re like junkies). And one of my good friends, who was on medication to control her anxiety, insecurity and aggressiveness, went off her medication. That was the last straw for me. I thought, well, if everyone I know is being crazy, why do I fight to stay sane? So, I’ve gone off the antidepressants I have been taking for the last 9+ years. Let’s see if I really still do have a brain chemical imbalance. So far, I’ve been feeling sick and tired and a bit grumpy but I think that could just all be part of the initial comedown, so I’m sticking with it for a while. But I do feel a bit bad because it’s Edels’ Birthday this Sunday and I’m a bit worried I’m not going to have the energy to celebrate it the way I would like to.

Edels, Hissykitty and I all went to see Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst. I was a bit grumpy with the women who sat behind us making comments all the way through the movie, like, “Oh, isn’t that dog so cute!” so I didn’t enjoy it like I think I should have, but it was a beautiful looking movie. I was a bit disappointed that it just ended with the families fleeing from their castle, as that seemed to be only half the story, and in fact it is. I think there needs to be a sequel about what happened after their retreat. I made Edels look up on Wikipedia what happened after the film’s ending and there is definitely enough there to make a sequel, although there will probably never be one.

Edels just reminded me I have also seen Casino Royale. I was a bit disappointed that they seemed to use a body double for the beach scene as the double was not as sexy as Daniel Craig seems to be (he looks so much sexier with his clothes on). And also saw Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Great Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. I’m not sure what I thought about this movie, other than that it was very shocking and cringeful. I will have to see it again to really get it. Although I think I definitely prefer Loius Theroux as a satirist, I still really like Sacha Baron Cohen.

Well, I think that is all, except to say a BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY to:

Troy P.
Angela G.
Michael M.
Claire J.
Andrew L.
And, of course,
Edels.

Happy Birthday all!
