Today it's 488 years since this guy was crowned King of Sweden, which for one thing dissolved the Kalmar Union once and for all, and for another lead to the escalating complexity of the Wasa succesion. In four generations, we had seven kings. (Christina was officially "king" rather than "queen".)

So because the Kalmar Union was dissolved, I guess this does make today our Independence Day. That's pretty interesting.
