Does anyone know where I might find a copy of Shannon's poem about Jimmy Hendrix/Janis Joplin? I don't even remember the name of the poem. It was one of my favorites of hers, and I wanted to be able to see if I could read it at a feature I have coming up, but I don't remember if it's doable or not. I remember there being a singing part in it ( Read more... )

She used to sing like Janis for it, too, right?
If she did it at any features, which I think she may have, there might be audio somewhere.Ask Mike, too.

There's another piece I think she only did at Nats in our semi-final bout, an earlier version of something else that I'm wanting to track down.

Mike who? Sorry if that's a silly question, I'm not that familiar with your scene.

Yes, that's definitely the piece, because I remember talking her into doing it in a poetry tag session in Albequerque and she said "Okay, but I'm not singing the beginning." I know she did it at her feature in Providence when she came through there on tour, so I'm sure she probably did it in features.

I have her computer files and will check if it's in there. Also, I'm picking up the videos from Mike Henry today (there was a key mishap last week). I'll see if your performance is in that collection and if so I'll try to send it as a video file. Can you open windows moviemaker files?

I'm in grad school for Video Production. If there's a video file I can't open on my computer, I'm sure I can find a computer that will open it.

Can you give me some more hints about the piece? I think she did the piece about her cousin, which I know I have in my files and can send you. Is that the one?

It could have been, but I thought it was just a poem about music. I could be wrong, I haven't heard it in about 3 years. I remember her doing it at her feature in Providence back in 2005, and then I talked her into doing it at poetry tag at nationals that year. The only other thing I remember about the poem was a part about Kurt Cobain, and how she said that his death seemed almost like it was planned or staged to cement his place in music history.

Janis poem and BNV drsheila November 29 2008, 23:37:56 UTC
Trevor - I still haven't been able to locate a text copy of Shannon's Janis poem, but I have it on DVD from her feature at Ego's before she left for Atlanta. I've burned you a copy and will pop it in the mail to you. I'm still keeping an eye open for the paper version, but haven't had time to go through the mountain of poetry yet. If you transcribe it, I'd love a copy. I'm sure she'd approve of you performing it :)

I found the BNV 2003 video, but it's on VHS and I only have one copy of it. I can transfer it over to my laptop once I get back to Kingsville on monday (that's where I've got the connectors and VSR that work the easiest). Is that too late for your class project? I'll be sending you a copy anyway along with Shannon's feature.

hugs,
Sheila

Sheila,

Thank you so much. I'm not sure if the video will be too late or not, but it's always worth a shot. I really appreciate you finding all these things for me. Thank you!

-Trevor

I'm also bringing a DVD of her Austin feature to Atlanta for you. The video isn't great - I did it! - and the lighting in Ego's sucks. But, it's something :)
