I've been meaning to post this - sorry it took me a while!
For
ballsstrikeback because she asked for it, for
rather_forget because she probably also would be very interested, for
melon_sky because she should start liking guac if she wants to continue being my friend, for
codyagarcia so he can tell me how inferior my recipe is, and for anyone else who wants to steal this in the name of good homemade guacamole!
This is the recipe my family has used for years and years from a New York Times cookbook from 1961 that is currently being held together by several pieces of packing tape.
GUACAMOLE - makes about one cup
You need:
Salt
1 clove garlic, cut
1 large ripe avocado, pitted
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons minced onion
Mayonnaise
1. Sprinkle a bowl with a little salt and rub with the garlic. Mash the avocado in the bowl and season with one-quarter teaspoon salt, the chili powder, and lemon juice.
2. Stir in the onion. If desired, the fleshy part of ripe tomatoes, diced, may be added; or sliced ripe olives; or crisp, crumbled bacon. Mix well.
3. Cover with a thin layer of mayonnaise to keep the mixture from darkening. Just before serving, stir well.
My mom said she never used mayonnaise. I think the lemon juice would kind of keep it anyway, right? Plus, we always devour it within 15 minutes of making it so there's never a need to "keep" it. We never used tomatoes, olives, or bacon either, but I know a few of you will be all over the bacon. I might make us put tomatoes in next time though. Mmmmmmmmmm.
