MPs expenses and FoI

Letter to Nick Raynsford on MPs expenses.

Dear Nick Raynsford,

I am writing to you to ask you to oppose Freedom of Information (Parliament) Order 2009. This order would remove details of MPs expenses from the scope of the Freedom of Information Act.

I believe that government benefits from greater transparency and that the Freedom of Information Act has been a valuable tool in increasing the accountability of public bodies to the electorate. As such, I feel that this order would be a step in the wrong direction, reducing public trust in Parliament. In addition, MPs should be required to account for their use of public money, as are other public bodies and public servants.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I hope that you will act in support of a more open Parliament.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Steven Hanlon
