continuing in silly news items (inspired by campbell)
so this big israeli food company osem decided regular cheerios weren't enough of a draw in israel and decided to stop importing them. (israelis tend to like more sugary cereals)(for those of you who know, take kariot. israel actually sellys nougat filled puffs as healthy breakfast food.)
hell hath no fury like an american scorned. the americans went crazy, and cheerios are coming back. here's the scoop on this melodrama, from haaretz.
"I realized the only way to change the situation was to galvanize people and raise a public outcry," said former New Yorker Jennifer Bayer, who organized the Osem campaign on Jaanglo, the popular Jerusalem Anglo e-mail group. "I got incredible, visceral responses that bordered on the hysterical."
According to Bayer, "hundreds" of Cheerios lovers responded to her postings, including a reader in New York who wanted to make sure the product would be available when he immigrates next month.
"It seemed that something touched a nerve," Bayer said. "There are a lot of American products that come in and out, but plain Cheerios has always been a touchstone product. It's the kind of thing that North American immigrants need as part of their diet - it represents a piece of stability that we were able to bring here when we moved. It really is a nonreplaceable product."
"I'm very pleased to see that agitating can sometimes work," added Shifra Freidman, who spearheaded the campaign on the Beit Shemesh e-mail list. "I've already printed up the letter [from Osem] and hung it up in our local supermarket. It's very exciting, but I'll still need to see it to believe it."
ummm...yay for activism? lots of work. maybe oud tomorrow.
