You know in B-grade movies when they have a scene set in Chinatown, and the middle-aged Chinese woman is using her extremely limited English to the utmost to express her frustration and anger? "You very bad man! You cheat me! I no pay!!"
This afternoon I had a set-to with the workman* who wanted a huge fee for fixing the lights in our house. In spite of the fact that 1/2 of them manifestly did not work.
And I realized that I am that woman, and I am playing that scene. Only reversed for Chinese audiences.
The realization made it hard for me play out the rest in character, but I managed.
*Stupid, lazy and greedy. A killer trifecta.
