Disclaimer: No one recognizable belongs to me and I’m sooo not making any money off this. The book Clint reads also does not belong to me.
Author's Note: So Iris wrote a an MI4 story about Brandt and inadvertently gave me a plot bunny about Clint. So this came about. The only thing you need to know is that Nessie is Tessa’s twin sister (identical twins in looks but not personality) and is/was pregnant. Also this counts as one of three stories I have to finish before I can “play” with my slutty cowboy. And if you want to know more about that…you’ll just have to encourage me to finish two more stories.

"Where are you going?" Clint asked as he entered their rooms to find Tessa hurriedly shoving clothes into a backpack. "Did we get a callout?"

Tessa glanced up before returning to what she'd been doing. "No. Mom just called. Nessie went into labor. I'm going to get Sarah from school and take her home."

"I could go with you?" he suggested. When Tessa just stared at him, he continued, "That's what I'm supposed to do, right? Unless you don't want me to go? I can stay here if you'd rather. I promise I'll stay out of trouble. Or well I won't start it."

Tessa crossed the room, cutting off his out pouring of words with a kiss. "You're babbling, Clint," she pointed out. "It's cute."

"I am not cute, Tessa!"

She gave a one shouldered shrug. "Of course you aren't. It was very manly babbling." When Clint pouted at her in response, Tessa pressed another kiss against his lips. “It’s up to you what you do. I can handle this on my own.” Turning back to her bag, she zipped it up. “I can keep you posted on my whereabouts.”

For a minute, he just watched as she finished her last minute preparations; gathering her jacket and grabbing her hair sticks and twisting her hair into place. As she headed towards the door, he finally spoke, “No.”

Sighing, she spun around. “Clinton, I really don’t have time for this. No what?”

Grey eyes flashing at her words, he ignored the use of his full name and said, “No, you aren’t keeping me posted on your whereabouts. Either I go with you or I meet you at your sister’s house.”

“Why exactly do you think I need you for this? I’m capable of watching Sarah on my own.”

“You’re mine,” he answered. “I want to be there.”

Her first reaction was to object, but she’d learned a while ago that his possessive streak had almost nothing to do with their personal relationship and everything to do with him trying to hold tightly onto someone who was important to him. It was this knowledge that made her decision for her. “Fine. Meet me at the house.” She headed out the door, then stuck her head back in. “Clint. Don’t pick the lock.”

“No? Why not? That’s a bad thing?” he asked, but she just shook her head and headed out of the room. He grinned for a minute before turning and grabbing the travel bag for his bike. He wouldn’t take long to pack and head out. He needed to meet his girls.

“Uncle Clint!” Sarah practically threw herself out of the car as Tessa stopped and ran towards the steps where Clint was sitting. “What are you doing here? Do you know Mommy’s having the baby? I’m gonna be a big sister! Are you gonna stay with me and Auntie Tessa?”

Clint put his hands out, just managing to catch the little girl before she slammed into him. “Which question am I supposed to answer first?” he asked Tessa.

“She’s not really expecting any answers,” Tessa replied. As she walked by him, she trailed her fingers through his hair, smiling slightly as he leaned into the touch. “Come on, you two. Let’s get inside.” She chivied them into the house, lifting Sarah’s backpack off her shoulder and depositing it on the bench just inside the door. “Do you want a snack?” she asked.

The little girl shook her head. “Can Uncle Clint play outside with me?”

“You’ll have to ask him,” Tessa replied. “But I don’t think he’ll have a problem with it.”

Sarah grabbed his hand, swinging it from side to side as she looked up at him with green eyes identical to Tessa’s. “Will you play with me? Teach me how to climb a tree like you do? Please?”

“Uh. I. A tree?” Clint flicked his eyes towards Tessa, then back towards Sarah as he tried to figure out how to answer the little girl.

“I think climbing trees aren’t the best plan today. If we have to go to the hospital to see Mommy and the new baby in a hurry, you don’t want to be up a tree,” Tessa cut in.

Clint knelt down in front of her, tipping her chin up when her eyes started to fill with tears at the answer. “Hey. Hey. No tears. There’s no reason to cry over it. We’ll climb the tree another time. But you don’t want to miss out on seeing your new baby brother or sister, do you?” He smiled when she shook her head. “There ya go. I don’t always get to go up a tree anyway. And there are plenty of other things I can show you.”

Tessa grabbed Clint’s sleeve as he started to follow Sarah out the door. “Barton, you are not teaching my niece to stalk someone. Nessie will have a shit fit.”

“Are you saying you wouldn’t want a child of ours to be able to protect his or herself?” he questioned.

“If it was our child?” she replied. “I’d tell you to teach them to kick ass and leave nobody left alive. But this is my sister’s child. My sister. Who screams at the thought of an itty bitty lizard. Do not do this.”

Clint grinned at her, leaning back towards her and kissing her quickly. “Trust me!” he called as he followed Sarah.

“That’s not reassuring!”

After a dinner of hot dogs mixed with macaroni and cheese, Tessa took Sarah upstairs to bathe her while Clint cleaned up. He was checking the windows and doors when the two of them came back downstairs. He had to grin at the sight of Tessa with her hair curling around her face from the humidity of the bathroom and the front of her shirt wet from Sarah’s splashing. Despite that, her chopsticks were still anchored firmly in the bun and he cast his memory back, realizing that she’d been armed the entire time they’d been here. Even here, she felt the need to carry something to protect the people she loved.

Tessa dropped down next to him on the couch as Sarah made a beeline for the small bookcase across the room. A minute later, she came back, a light blue book clutched tightly in one hand. With her free hand, she grabbed Clint’s jeans and hauled herself up into his lap. He was so surprised that he didn’t have time to help her. She turned around, plopping herself down and opening the book. “Read to me,” she demanded.

“Say please,” Tessa corrected as she reached for the book.

“Not you,” Sarah told her, pulling the book away. “Uncle Clint.” She held the book over her shoulder, only his reflexes preventing her from hitting him in the head. “Please?”

A look of pure panic crossed his face as he looked at Tessa. “Are you sure you don’t want Auntie Tessa to read to you?” he asked her.

A look of mulishness crossed her face (one he’d seen an older version of on Tessa’s face before) and she shook her head. “No. I want you!”

“Okay.” He took the book, cracking it up. “What do we have? Leonardo the Terrible Monster, huh? Okay, I’ll read. But I’m not doing sound effects. Or voices.”

“But, Uncle Cli-int,” she whined. “That’s the best part.”

Tessa nudged him, leaning her head against his shoulder. “Yeah, Uncle Clint, that’s the best part.”

“Okay, that sounds just creepy coming from you,” he told her. He turned his attention to Sarah who had started turning the pages of the book, sounding out the words she recognized. “All right. Voices, but sound effects are non-negotiable.”

The little girl tilted her head to the side, considering his offer for a minute. “Deal,” she told him. Snuggling back against him, she offered the book again, “Read now, please?”

Tessa pressed a kiss to the side of his neck as he started to read. “Sucker,” she whispered in his ear. “Sound effects are a ton easier.”

Clint glared at her over Sarah’s head as he continued to read. Maybe he had been suckered into reading for the little girl, but he had to admit this wasn’t a bad place to be. He could feel himself relaxing, even as he was semi-compromised with the heavy weight of the little girl in his lap. Tessa was able to protect them almost as well as he could and sometimes he did need to give up the control. This was a feeling he could get used to, being uncle to the little girl resting so trustingly in his arms.
