Author's Note: sparklingrocks  has surgery this past week and I told her I’d write her a story since she’s going to be laid up for a while. This was what I came up with. Thanks to whogeek  who helped me brainstorm ideas. I took a little bit of liberty with Pearl Harbor here and what you can and can’t do there, but not too much.

Steve winced as his feet touched the sandy bottom of the cove, but he powered through what seemed to be a minor discomfort and headed for the beach. Grabbing the towel that he’d left on the deck chair, he headed towards his house, stumbling slightly as another wave of pain stabbed at his side. Frowning, he pressed at his right side, trying to stave off the pain. After a minute, it faded again and he took a deep breath, checking the tenderness of the site. When no other pain seemed to register, he resumed his trek towards the house, albeit at a slower pace. He wasn’t going to let a pulled muscle derail his plans for the day.

By the time he’d showered and dressed, he was sweating lightly, but he put it off to the humidity of the day and his hurry to be ready before Danny and Grace arrived. When Danny had told him that Grace had missed her class trip to Pearl due to a cold, Steve had jumped at the chance to take the father and daughter to the memorial. He’d assured Danny that it was no problem, but it had taken them a few weeks to find a time when Danny had the little girl and their job didn’t interfere. Now nothing was going to interrupt their outing.

The purr of a high powered engine sent him moving swiftly towards the door, ignoring the pain that twinged as he walked. He opened the door in time to see a familiar brunette running up his walkway. Knowing that her first instinct would be to leap for him, he headed her off; striding forward to scoop her up and balance her on his left hip. “Good morning, Gracie,” he greeted her as she threw her arms around his neck.

“Morning, Uncle Steve,” she chirruped in response. “Danno says we’re going to see a boat.”

“Ship,” he corrected. “And it’s a memorial for the ship and its servicemen.”

Grace considered it for a minute before wiggling until he put her down. “But we get to ride on a boat, right?” she asked, tugging on his hand and heading towards the car.

“Yeah, we do,” Steve told her. He opened the door, moving the seat back so she could scramble into the back. “Morning, Danno,” he greeted his partner as he eased himself down into the passenger seat.

“You okay, McGarrett?” Danny asked. “Cause you aren’t…you didn’t even…you don’t want to drive?”

“Nah, I figure you know where we’re going and you’re in the driver’s seat already.”

“Um, pod person? Who are you and what have you done with Steve?” Danny asked even as he put the car into reverse.

“Nothing. I just…” Steve turned in his seat so he could see Grace, who’d slid across and was sitting behind her father. “Grace, what do you know about Pearl Harbor?”

“On December seventh, nineteen forty-one the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in an attempt to prevent the United States from entering World War Two. This backfired, despite the sneak attack on the harbor and the massive casualties the US suffered,” Grace reported. Steve’s eyes widened at the amount of information the little girl knew. “One of the ships that sank in the attack was the USS Arizona. It was decided not to raise the ship and a memorial was built over it. Daddy said your grandfather was on the ship.”

“He was,” Steve agreed softly. “So what else do you know?” he asked.

The rest of the way they chatted about the attack on the harbor, with Steve carefully editing the information he knew. He’d learned over the months what he could and couldn’t talk about with Grace. Danny kept shooting him glances as he drove, but didn’t say anything.

Steve directed Danny towards a back lot when they got to the harbor, leaning across the other man to flash his ID at the guard. They were directed in to park at the far end. “You get special parking, Uncle Steve?” Grace asked as they got out; Steve wincing at the change in position.

“Since I’m still in the Navy, we can park over here,” Steve explained to her. He pointed across the harbor towards the Memorial. “We just need to walk across there to get to the boat.”

“Gracie, why don’t you walk over there and see when the next boat leaves and how much our tickets are going to be,” Danny suggested.

She considered this for a minute, then nodded. “Okay, Daddy.”

As soon as Grace was out of earshot, Danny rounded on Steve. “Okay, what is going on? You don’t want to drive. You’re wincing when you move. You didn’t throw Grace around. Did you change your mind about today?”

“No. Never,” Steve protested. “I just…I think I pulled a muscle or something when I was swimming this morning. Cause I have this pain in my side. But I don’t want to disappoint Gracie.”

“A muscle?” Danny asked suspiciously.

“Yes, Danny, a muscle. A fibrous mass that connects bones together and contracts to produce movement. If you move them at the wrong angle or too far, you pull them. It’s nothing. I’m fine.” He nodded in the direction of the visitors’ center. “Grace is heading back. And should have discovered that we don’t need to pay for our tour, but we do need to pick up our tickets. Normally you can’t reserve them, but I called in a favor.”

Danny eyed him suspiciously, but magnanimously motioned towards the building. “We aren’t finished with this. I don’t think it’s just a pulled muscle. Super SEAL wouldn’t let that slow him down.”

“But it’s not, Danny,” Steve pointed out as Grace re-joined them.

“What’s wrong, Monkey?” Danny asked at the look on her face. “What’s with the long face?”

“The…ranger?” Grace started, making the word a question, and at Steve’s nod, she continued, “The ranger said that we didn’t have to pay to go to the Memorial, but it’s a two hour wait. That’s a long time, Daddy.”

“Normally you would have to wait, Grace,” Steve said. He motioned for them to start walking towards the center. “But…since I know one of the rangers here.” He waved at the man walking towards them. “We have tickets waiting for us and I suspect we won’t be waiting that long.”

“McGarrett!” the ranger called when they were within hearing distance. “Good to see you again, man.” Danny hung back a bit as Steve and the man grasped hands, pulling each other in and hugging briefly. He noted the wince Steve was able to hide from the other man, but not him. The man smiled as Steve moved back, crouching down to Grace’s level. “Is this your kaikamahine, man?” He winked at Grace. “You are very maika’i, my dear.”

Grace giggled as she held out her hand. “I’m Grace. And this is my Danno. How do you know Uncle Steve?”

“I went to high school with your Uncle Steve,” the man explained as he shook Grace’s hand politely. “He used to throw me the football. I’m David Kealoha.”

“Excuse me. There will be no flirting with my eight year old daughter,” Danny broke in.

David got easily to his feet. “I’m sorry. I really wasn’t flirting with her. My oldest is about her age. McGarrett couldn’t stop talking about her when he called to ask about getting tickets for today so I was looking forward to meeting her.” He held his hand out. “David Kealoha.”

Slightly mollified by the explanation, Danny shook his hand. “Danny Williams. I try to keep this goof from blowing up Honolulu.”

David’s grin widened. “Still trying to put your chemistry lessons into practice, eh, McGarrett?”

Steve smirked. “Hey, I have government permission to do it now.”

“And that is the scary part,” Danny commented.

“I don’t think I want to know,” David replied. He glanced back at the center, where the dock was just visible. “So I’ve got your tickets and the boat should be leaving in about five minutes or so.” He dug the slips out of his pocket, passing them over to Steve. “You’re okay to take them through?”

“Yeah, we should be fine. Thanks for this.” Steve held his hand out, shaking David’s and Danny followed suit, echoing Steve’s words.

“Enjoy your visit,” David called as he walked back towards his post.

Steve took the hand Grace held out to him as Danny took her other hand, steering them towards the dock. “You really went to school with him, Uncle Steve?” Grace questioned.

“I did,” Steve confirmed, his foot coming down wrong on the path and jarring his side. He sucked in his breath against the sudden sharp pain that shot through his body. “He…we played football together.”

“He said that.” Danny tugged on Grace’s hand, stopping their forward momentum. “Okay. What is going on? That is not a pulled muscle.”

Steve spun around, intending to confront Danny, and doubled over as pain spiked through his body. “Danny, I.”

“Yeah, you’re not fine,” Danny dissuaded him. “Gracie, go get the ranger. Don’t run, but walk very fast.” He grabbed Steve’s arm as the taller man tried to stop her. “Oh, no you don’t.” Easing him down onto the bench that was luckily near-by, Danny poked him in the shoulder when Steve tried to get back up. “Stay.”

Trying to breathe through the pain, Steve shook off Danny’s hands. “I’m fine. I’m not ruining Grace’s day.”

“Yeah well Grace’s day will be ruined a whole lot more if we have to fish Uncle Steve out of the harbor. So you’re going to sit right here until the nice ranger…” He looked up as David joined them, trailed closely by a pair of EMTs and Grace. “Hi, this is my stubborn partner, Steve McGarrett,” Danny introduced him to them. “Who has been insisting all morning that he’s got a pulled muscle. It’s apparently something more.”

“Hi, Mr. McGarrett,” the older man started. “I’m Kevin. Mind if we take a look? Just to relax your partner and little girl?”

“I’m fine,” Steve insisted. “And she’s his daughter. And we just work together.”

“Really? You’re going to argue about that now?” Danny asked. He rolled his eyes, but pulled his wallet out of his pocket, flipping it open and showing it to the EMTs. “Five-0. Happy now, McGarrett? Will you let the man check you out?”

Steve still looked mutinous, but he moved his arms, letting Kevin press against his abdomen. He let out a pained sound as the man palpitated his right side. The EMT’s expression didn’t change, but he exchanged a look with his partner. “Okay, we’re gonna recommend you go to the hospital. Do you have one you prefer?”

“I’m fine,” Steve immediately said.

“Sir, I don’t want…” Kevin glanced at Grace who was standing quietly by Danny’s side, holding tightly to his hand. “The location of your pain makes me suspect it’s your appendix. Now you aren’t writhing on the ground in agony so I’d suspect it’s not about to burst, but I’d strongly recommend you head for the hospital now and let someone more qualified check you out.”

When Steve looked like he was going to refuse, Danny ordered, “Pick a hospital. Or Grace will pick one for you. And I don’t think that’s something either of us wants.”

“Detectives, we need to let the hospital know we’re on our way,” Kevin interrupted.

“Commander,” Steve corrected. “And Tripler. I’d prefer to go to Tripler.”

“All right. Let’s get you onto the stretcher and we’ll be on our way,” Kevin instructed. Quickly and efficiently, they got Steve loaded onto the mentioned stretcher with a minimum of pain.

Danny stepped up next to him just before they wheeled him towards the medic. Squeezing his shoulder, he told him, “I’m going to run Grace back to her mom and I’ll meet you at the hospital. Make sure I can get in, okay? And I’ll wait until they make a decision on whether you need to have surgery or not.”

“Thanks, Danny,” Steve said.

Grace tugged on his hand and Danny quickly lifted her up so she could lean over to carefully hug Steve. “Aloha Au Ia 'Oe, Uncle Steve,” she told him softly.

Steve looked up at Danny, who clearly didn’t understand the Hawaiian words, but knew she’d said something important. “Thank you, Gracie,” Steve said finally. “That…I…”

“Okay. The men have to take Uncle Steve now so he can stop being a stubborn man and they can find out why his insides hurt, okay, Gracie?” Danny said, nodding at the EMTs.

Grace held tightly to his shirt as they watched the men wheel Steve away. “Is Uncle Steve gonna be okay, Daddy?” she asked.

“Yeah, he’s going to be just fine,” Danny assured her, settling her more firmly on his hip. “He’s too stubborn to be any other way. Now come on. Lemme take you back to Mommy ‘cause hospitals have these silly rules that say monkeys can’t come in.”

“But you’ll call me later?” she asked.

“I will absolutely call you later and tell you how cranky Uncle Steve is. And when we think we can bring you back if you want.” Danny kept up a steady stream of chatter the whole walk back to the car and then the drive to Rachel’s. By the time he’d turned Grace over to her mother and was headed to Tripler, the doctor had already called him on Steve’s request to let him know that Steve was going in for an emergency appendectomy because of course the SEAL had been hiding the fact that his appendix was about to burst.

By the time Steve woke up in his hospital bed a few hours later, Danny was sitting at his bedside. He dropped his feet to the floor at the first sounds of Steve stirring and leaned forward. “Good to see you awake, man,” he said, offering Steve an ice chip from the cup.

Steve took it gratefully, his hazel eyes sliding closed almost immediately as he sucked on it. “Yeah, I’ll be here,” Danny told him. “I’ll be here.”

Aloha Au Ia 'Oe-I love you

The National Park at Pearl Harbor is both beautiful and sad; if you have a chance to visit there I highly recommend it. It has been many, many years since I went, but I still remember it. Steve requested to be taken to Tripler Army Hospital. I’m pretty sure he would still be able to go since he’s in the reserves. I know nothing about appendicitis so I was pretty much making that up from what I read and just generally making that up; any mistakes are artistic license.
