Steven and Virginie just rocked this weekend. I get more out of their fundamentals classes than I do most of their other ones, which I think is a tribute to their teaching ability. We had students in the class who hadn't finished their first month of beginner classes, yet got through the routine just fine, and at the same time I was working really hard to get Virginie's technique down. She continues to be great at explaining difficult concepts simply and concisely. Definitely an inspiration.
I had more fun dancing Friday night than I have in a long while. Everything was right: music, people, the room, the inspiration. My mojo was back in force and the humor and joy that I love about dancing was present in every dance. John and I tag teamed the music, which I love doing. I'm just a better DJ when I have someone else's ideas combining with mine.
I took the Saturday classes and enjoyed them (especially Virginie's movement class), but that started to diminish as the moves became more and more dependent on good leading. Many of the leads in the class couldn't do a swingout, not to mention the body leading necessary to avoid throwing their follows around. After a while, being cranked and yanked made my back hurt and I bailed, just watching and icing my back. I stayed for the beginning of the blues class, but honestly, there were very few guys in the rotation that didn't give me the heebie jeebies. So no need to stay.
Took a nap, had some sushi with Jason and the Dyers, then went to the dance. Eh. Besides being contantly flat, the singer wasn't bad, just not inspiring. All of the arrangements they played were exact replicas of the songs we've danced to a million times. And I just found myself wishing that the actual recording was playing. I really do love dancing to live music, just not mediocre live music. Luckily, I got to use the time to catch up with people I see oh so rarely.
Sunday morning, I woke up very sore, and not all that excited about going to classes. So I didn't. Just worked with Jason on getting his new abode in order. Went to dinner at Yummy Yummy Tasty Thai (twice as yummy!) with the Dyers, the Rosses and the Ensher-Isackses. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...Mee Krab. The owner of the restaurant is a kick and everything I tried was fantastic. I'm so glad she moved the restaurant to Louisville. There's no such thing as too much Thai.
I got enough dancing to make the weekend worth it, but didn't overdo it. Got some fun ideas to teach, got plenty of stuff to work on, and wasn't exhausted at the end of the weekend. All in all, a good one.
Next weekend, power house improvement and PSSB. I've missed it!
