I'm sitting in a smoky Internet Cafe because I just tried to withdraw money from an ATM and it didn't work. It said "processing transaction" then went blank. A little sketchy. So I got a bit freaked out and wanted to make sure it didn't actually go through. Which it did not. This is nice in that I didn't get ripped off, but bad because it appears my card isn't working here so I have no idea how to get more money. And I'm going to need some for my 5-day trip to Crete that starts on Sunday. So that kind of blows. I don't yet know what I'm going to do about that.
Also, MyUW page tells me 3 temperatures: Madison, WI: -1 F; Andover, MN: 7 F; Athens, Greece: 65 F. Just thought that was a fun fact to share.
Meanwhile, I had a few random thoughts in my mind I'd like to share:
1. People drive terribly here. Most of the time sidewalks are futile because there are lots of cars parked on them, so it's usually best just to walk in the street. However, this can be problematic and terrifying. Yesterday some lady was driving straight towards me for a full 10 seconds before she decided to turn away at the last possible second before she would hit me. And just generally they're always tearing around. It's not like Madison where they stop for pedestrians. Don't walk in front of cars. I can't tell if this is an exclusively Greek phenomenon because French drivers are horrible too. I think it might be a general characteristic of European or city drivers.
2. I'm seriously considering the possibility that tzatziki has some sort of addicitve properties in it. It's SO GOOD and I want to put it on everything I eat.
3. Laundry will prove harder to do than I ever imagined. I just bought some Tide powder soap to try and wash my clothes in the bathroom tub. That'll be a riot. I can tell already.
4. I'm going to need a siesta to be able to keep up with the Greeks. Resturaunts don't even open until 8 pm and they don't get crowded until at least 10 pm. Then clubs don't get busy until around 2 or 3 in the morning. It's hard to keep up with them.
5. I've gone to more class just this week than I did all last semester. OK, that's an exaggeration, but not by much. Two days of class here is equivalent to about a week's worth of class last semester. That's wearing too because we don't get out each day until 5 or 7 pm. But I'm learning, I guess. I even know some Greek now.
Right, so my lungs are blackening from sitting here in the smoke. I'll update after my Crete trip. Keep it real.
