Submarine Movie

Watched the Submarine movie on Sunday. The friends and I loved the trailer and , decided to watch it together. I really loved it. The freshness of the story, the depiction of the central characters, the wittiness of the dialogue and the cinematography of the movie is truly applaudable.

The extremely unmodest protagonist who self-proclaims himself to be a genius. His thoughts resonates with many viewers as we often think that we are the smartest and are loved by everyone subconsciously. In our twisted minds, it probably makes sense. The plight of the pubescent protagonist, Oliver Tate is hilarious as it brings to light the awkwardness and uncertainity of coming-of-age.

The analogy of the character's dilemma in life is aptly described in its title. Submarine. Half-submerged between two worlds, Oliver, observes the world through his own viewing glass.

British humour is something that I've always enjoyed as it is more witty than slapstick. This movie has again reinforced this thought of mine. As a young adult, my teenage years flash past as I recall the movie. The curiosity, innocence and first love. These images fade as I immerse myself into the shackles of he working world. Perhaps all is lost when you transit from adolescent to adulthood. This movie managed to jolt my memory back to happier times.

The lighting of the movie was simply wonderful and suited the mood of the movie.

One of my favourite portions from the movie was when Oliver informed the audience (matter of factly) that he "conducted a routine check" in his parents' room. In another, he spies on his mother's ex-lover's psychic session which is obviously phony but people seem convinced by his powers.

This movie was part of the Singapore International Film Festival 2011 and I'm really glad that I got to catch it. It is a must catch for all.
