So, I'm in for the long haul re: office hours today. Am just hanging out during class time for my two afternoon classes, so students can come consult with me about projects. Hence, I'm all kicked back: shoes off, drinking coffee out of my "She Who Must Be Obeyed" mug, eating Triscuits, and playing the demo version of
Virtual Villagers 2: The Lost Children (complete with tropical soundtrack), because hell's bells, it's Monday afternoon and WHY in the world would I be grading Romantic English Lit. exams when I have five hours on my hands?
All of a sudden I hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet coming down the hall, and lots of 'em. Well, okay--not so tiny, as it is the complete troop of board/cabinet members, on a tour of the new ad building. Our chair had considerately warned us that this visit was going to occur--I, of course, had forgotten all about it.
*SLAM* goes the laptop cover. I flail around looking for my shoes (this is not the time nor place to show the toe-too to the board, you know?) and realize that the steel drum soundtrack from the game is still playing. Fumble for power button while still looking for shoes. Find it, shove shoes on, and drag stack of exams on top of laptop and pick up one at random, just in time to appear productive and look over my glasses at the board members, who seem happy to be observing the Rare and Beautiful English Teacher in Her Natural Habitat, obviously subsisting very well on the pittance they pay me (I'm not bitter).
After they wander off, I realize: exam I am "marking" is upside down.
Can I go home now?
