Not as funny as I hoped, but not as bad...
Well, I didn't laugh as much as I expected to, but *shrugs*. The episode turned out to be really anvillicious, actually, but the few truths sprinkled in pushed it into the win column. Also, Paris has a good sense of humor about herself, and I appreciate that. She wasn't as horrible as I feared she might be, and the writing and timing of the episode was pretty off anyway, so I'll call it a draw.
In the beginning conversation in the car, I have to say that I really didn't believe Sam. He came across as totally on the revenge train, and what's more, he had no plan to offer, just pissiness. And of course, he tried to make Dean's comments into a personal attack. No cookie for you! But during his speech in the hotel room, I was cheering. He showed positive signs of growing up and thoughtfulness (well, he talked like a thoughtful
grown-up. I'm still waiting for some action). Here Sam, have a cookie! A really good, Pepperidge Farm one!
And Dean was acting like a real dick (although I wondered what box *that* suddenly broke out of). Overcompensating much? NO COOKIE FOR YOU! But then, Dean earned two at the end, for realizing he was overreacting, for apologizing about it, and then, for offering his baby up on the altar of forgiveness. Many cookies for you!!
One thing really marred it for me though. Sam's reaction to the overheard conversation. It actually took me a minute to figure out what he might be so upset about, because my mind totally didn't go to Dean blaming Sam for everything. It went right to Dean blaming Lucifer for everything. And the fact that Sam still can't see that the apocalypse isn't Dean's main hurt, really irked me. Grumble, grumble. Actually, it's the same thing that
made me not believe Sam during the beginning conversation in the Impalla. He's still so hellbent on making everything personal. Quit pushing your shit off on Dean! Own it, boy! You want to be treated as an adult, be allowed to grow up, then act like a grownup. Jeesh. But anyway, I did see signs of growth (in Sam) midway through the episode, and I liked 'em. Dean, however. Dear God. Dean once again is being written as an overbearing idiot, so much so that it almost ruined his moment at the end. It made the intelligence,
compassion and thought shown during that last conversation with Sam, almost seem to belong to a different character. I mean, he was overbearing, pushy, didn't know things he should have (again), HE SLACKED OFF ON THE JOB (!!!!), and altogether was NOT the Dean who's gone through Hell (literally). God, the writing for Dean this season is so uneven, it's making me scream. Also, while I'm happy that Sam made some really grown-up comments, I'm getting sick of Dean doing all the apologizing and compromising. Even it up, writers, cause guess what? If things are really going to change, SAM NEEDS TO CHANGE HIS BEHAVIOUR JUST AS MUCH (IF NOT MORE SO) AS DEAN. And right now, Sam is all lip service.
