ranting at the radio

Feb 14, 2006 12:40

below is a copy of a post I put up on the website of 100'5 MAXfm. I'm copying it here so that it won't dissapear forever if they decide to take it down, especially since this is the only real criticism that seems to have made it onto their board.

h'okay, so, first, i really do appreciate your station's lack of babbling idiots. very nice move there. The last thing i want to hear in the morning is a room full of guys laughing for half an hour at something that deserves no more than a 2-second chuckle. Rock.

The things I would like to see change with your station are, unfortunately, the result of mass changes sweeping across the face of radio, which I am powerless to affect. It's all about money, and squeezing every last drop out of a public that pretty much wants to be exploited. There's no fighting the man, but I'll rant anyway.

I would really like to hear some genuine DJ's on the air. Not someone who's going to yap on and on about nothing and get wrapped up in their own personality and delusions of celebrity, just someone to introduce songs, maybe give a little info, and take an occasional call. This sounds wierd coming from a 22 year old, but I miss the good old days of radio.

But here's the BIG ONE. If there's one thing i'd like to change about MAX, it would be this; Metallica on Top. It's gotta go. We don't need to hear them every half hour. My best guess is that you actually don't like Metallica, and are trying to kill the band by overplaying them.

Don't get me wrong, Metallica's a good band, but there are so many bands you're passing over to play Metallica all the fricken time. What I'd love to see is "Metal on Top." And dig a little deep. Give metallica a break, and let loose with a little Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Motorhead... Go crazy! You were teens in the 70's and 80's, not me, so you know even better than I do how much great metal there was. Dig it up! Play it! What makes Metallica any better than the rest of them? No band deserves sucha huge portion of the airtime. And if any band could use some exposure, it certainly isn't Metallica.

In Flames and Trivium are coming to town. Shouldn't they get some play? How about some Shadows Fall, Nightwish, or Children of Bodom?

To be fair, I'll name some names I don't even like, but who should still get some airplay; Arch Enemy, Krisiun, Mercyful Fate.

Hell, there's so much music out there, there's no excuse for any sone to ever get overplayed, and certainly no justification for one band to monopolize your airwaves so much.

But I know I'm a fool. Hit charts and demographic studies make your playlists, which are then sent to you from above. transferred straight into your automation system, no doubt. Are you a Clearchannel station, by the way?

Chart-lovers (mainly squids, frat-boys, and their groupies) have a place to go. Indie and punk kids can find college radio easy enough. But there's no station for metal fans... not without going to Finland, at least.

But who knows? Maybe I'll be heard. Maybe you'll decide to put some effort into your playlist selection, and find some way to slip it past the big-biz monitors who control your station with an uncaring iron grip from some city far away. Maybe.
