just watched Lemmony Snickett's a Series of Unfortunate Events, and it was fantastical. i can't believe something like it was actually made, considering all the other slush coming out from big-budget companies; truly original, funny, new, with good acting and nice cinematography. cg used well, but also an abundance of great actual props and beautiful sets... a brand new fairy tale. that's the best way i can describe it; a fairy tale or tall tale. if you liked the magic of Big Fish, then you'll like this. a real chunk of imagination.
i was bothered by a comment dad made... actually two of the. one; "Why would dustin hoffman take such a piddly little part? is he that desperate?"
grrr... sometimes actors take little cameo bits for fun. sometimes a friend is doing a cool project, making a real, true movie, and they try to get in a little, just for kicks.
second, he started saying; "it was new york. it must have been in new york. had to have been in new york..."
it's the type of movie where the exact setting doesn't matter; indeed, pinning it down to a place kills the magic. it was an archetype of many different kinds of places; gothic old cities, the northeast coast, dingy london, modern america... so many more, all impossibly out of time... or coexisting within several periods.
ahhh, whatever. not everybody looks at movies the same. it was fantastic. i want it, and i want the soundtrack too!
