the first time i performed poetry in public was sophmore year of college and I remember being barefooted with my bleached hair and dark roots in the pit. I think it was durin' the summer.
i performed two pieces at the poetry slam at church last friday. it was cathartic and healin', because it was fully bein' myself in church. i performed one piece called woulda, shoulda, coulda, which had the line of "only if i was your normal everyday anarchist with just politics, and not this crazy god talk. Creation, incarnation and resurrection."
i also performed a piece about demons and angels, which was a piece written about the privilege in the church and it's confusion of mistaking one for the other. When folks from the margins come knockin' at our door, they're really angels.
havin' some radical experiences in detroit, whenever i go for ministry.
sang some gospel music, while doin' art and soul (makin' art with homeless folks). this woman was playin' the piano and singin' and a man named elvis was cuttin' hair and singin' with her. one point, a homeless fella broke out his trumpet. it was pretty amazin'. i recognized one song, which i had performed with the gospel choir at duke.
