It has occurred to me, several times, since the towers fell that this is going to be the moment my kids and grandkids ask about. Where I might ask my grandparents or parents where they were when Kennedy was shot or when man landed on the moon. My kids are going to have the history assignment of asking me where I was and what I was going on 9/11/2001.
I was getting ready for work and had some time to kill so I turned on the TV. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on because the news anchors were all in too much shock to actually give good information. But then the second plane hit and it went from tragic accident to terrorist attack. In time I watched the news before leaving for work I remember seeing the towers fall, hearing about the plane hitting the Pentagon, Flight 93 crashing and all flights being grounded. I can't really tell you more because I was in too much shock to register everything that was going on. Terrorist attacks and acts of war happen in other countries all the time but for some reason we keep thinking they can't happen here. I rather imagine the initial reaction to Pearl Harbor was similar. Not here, things like that just don't happen in the USA. But they do. Maybe not quite so dramatic, but they do. The Oklahoma City bombing, the attack on the World Trade Center years earlier. These things do happen here, we just don't like thinking about it.
I spent most of the day in this sort of numb state. I remember feeling relieved when we heard from my aunt - my uncle had not been flying that day. He's a pilot. I remember the only people who really came in to shop (worked at a Family Christian Story at the time) were workers from Rockie Flats who had been told to go home early. I also remember that two albums were released that day: Micheal W. Smith's Worship and POD's Satellite. It's a strange thing to remember, but some things stick and some don't.
